That pepperoni looks absolutely phenomenal. That may have been the inspiration I needed to break out my sausage equipment.

Straight from the US Copyright Office website......

http://www.copyright.gov/fls/fl122.html

The recipe is fair game, however any further description, explanation, instructions, illustration, etc... from the book are covered as the book is a literary expression and the book can be copyrighted.  Guess that's why Coca-cola keep the recipe in a vault at Coke HQ.

Guess we don't need to break out the secret knock and handshake just yet
Copyright or not, I for one have not and won't be posting copies of recipes from books I purchased to the web. Not because I payed for them or think I'm better than anyone else, but because IMO it's wrong. Maybe a PM or E-mail..... to each his own I guess. Someone could ask for Jeff's recipes until they're blue in the face, they won't be getting it from me.
As I said in my response to the original request, it is more than just the copyright issue. Someone created a recipe and published it. They should have the right to profit from it as opposed to me giving it away. However, I do not intend to judge others' actions. It is just a personal thing that I do not want to impinge on anyone else's creativity.

Disco,

Looks great, hope it tastes as good. I have been watching this thread for a couple of days, not wanting to get in the middle or contribute to the hijacking of your thread. However some of these posts could lead others into trouble.

First off, I want to state I am not a member of the bar, but I visited on last night. I did discuss this with 3 of my friend, who are lawyers. All agreed that recipes can be copyrighted and a violation likely occurred. Rexlan and Dward51, have accurately cited the law, but completely misapplied its intent. What Nepas posted went well beyond a mere listing of ingredients. It clearly listed proportions of those ingredients. While I seriously doubt the books author or publisher would seek any damages from a forum post, they certainly could under the law.

Maybe this would be a good place to set some standards, for what is legal and/or ethical. I know I will not post someone else's recipes unless I have their permission or unless it was previously in the public domain. If it is already public, I think you should cite the creator and link to their post. Just my 2 cents

Yikes

I guess my post of the recipe really started a firestorm of laws.

This is why my posts have been fewer. SMF is a great forum but some posts are to much drama

Like someone posted "NEPAS I DO NOT AGREE WITH YOU POSTING THIS.  I WOULD LIKE TO SEE YOU REMOVED FROM THIS FORUM!'

So with that said i will delete the post and send a PM to the Admin's

Have a great day

And the funny part is that the recipe is pretty poor to boot.  Short about 50% of the ingredient.

I disagree with Shannon's lawyers.  The law is simple language and not subject to interpretation.   - you can not copyright a recipe, which is combining ingredients.  There is nothing new or created.  It is like trying to obtain a patient on dirt.

That all said, however, some of you folks, and rather righteously, have certainly made a BFD out of nothing.  I'm sorry I asked but I agree with Nepas and think it is ridiculous. As a result, you will probably see less participation.

Every recipe posted on this forum shares the exact same so called violation .... how pitiful is this.  Shame on all the bad people posting recipes and I will bet that 99.99% of them are not original creative works just thought up out of the blue... not likely and this one wasn't either.

Everyone who has posted a recipe now needs to turn themselves in to the forum police.

Admin needs to remove the recipe section as well.

Copying and pasting somebodies work without giving them an attribute is wrong  ... period..

Same with pictures  ya cant take a picture and use just because ya saw it on the net..

This thread has the laws and info about copyright stuff..

Thanks for your input Craig. Again, I do not know the law. It just feels wrong to post someone else's creation. However, I do not feel qualified to comment on others' posts.

Great Job on the pepperoni Disco!!

It's a great feeling to make something from scratch, and even better to taste the results!!

Put this thread back on track
