Well I couldn't find this info online so I figured I would ask you guys.

Does/Has anyone here ever smoked meat with just pecan shells?

If so, did it provide a smoke ring at all?

I ask because my mother scrounges up a couple hundred pounds of pecans each year (she's a pecan maniac) and has tons of shells left over. I figured I may break up 5-10 pounds of shells into small'ish pieces and mix in with the pellets in my AMNPS to try and get a smoke ring.

I also like the idea of being able to make pecan bends with the shells for free rather than buying pecan pellets.

I hope someone out there can provide some good and accurate info on this topic, thanks!

I've heard of people using pecan shells with great luck. I'm not sure about smoke rings with it in the Mes. I've put four charcoal briquettes on an aluminum grate on the rails near the heating element and still have a tough time generating enough NO/CO gas to form a ring. Hit miss. I like the flavor of the briquettes though.

My thought was that the shells might be able to be enough and I have access to a buuuuuuuuuunch of shells. I'm also curious to see how they behave in the AMNPS mixed with some pellets

I use just pecan shells often works great. I put them in my amazn smoker and light no need for pellets. Its best to have just shells and no meat from the pecan as the meat can make the smoke bitter. I'm not sure about the smoke ring as I only do this with chicken.

Excellent info! Do you smash up the shells so they are in small chunks and can easily fill the rows of the AMNPS rather than being in big chunks with lots of air/gaps?
