I have an oven I am converting into a smoker. This particualr one has a side broild compartment on it which I was going to use in a way I have 2 smokers side by side, that way in the smaller side I can not only smoke turkey legs or slabs of ribs but I can have 2 completely different flavors of wood burning at the same time.
The question I have is this...
I was going to try and add a small box on top of one of the oven vents that come through the top where the burners were. If I do it so I can remove part of the smoke stack extension and replace it with a little box that holds salmon or cheese and then vent through the top of that do you think it could be cold enough at that point to cold smoke?
I am adding a little drawing I just made showing how it would look with this mod (assuming I get the picture to show up properly.
What do you guys think, would it work and smoke cold enough?

hope the pic works. Tried to add them directly but after resizing 4-5 times I gave up.

Well, at least this link works for what I was trying to show. Not sure what I am doing wrong when trying to add photos to the post itself.
ps. If the link doesn't show the pic very good I can up it larger, or I could work on figuring why it won't show in my thread...
Damn stuff that makes me feel like a noob since this is the first forum I have ever joined, other than that I was living in a more underground area on the net, so posting pics...well, I'm a noob in that department.

Like the drawings. Even included a sun in the corner LOL. Well Im not expert, but it looks good to me. Should work no problem. Im thinking that as far as cold smoking goes, the vent might be a little hot for that. Maybe if you ran a longer vent tube before it got to the cold smoke box? Like a 90 degree elbow over to the box. Are you going to keep the electric elements and use them for heat and add a wood pan? Did not see where or if you said what the heat source was going to be. Very curious as how this will turn out. Well I should say, I know it will turn out, cant wait to see pics of it. Keep us posted on its progress.

Glad you enjoyed my drawing.
Most likely I am going to get rid of the elements and add a hot plate under each side. Great thing about adding the removable slow smoker box is I could always extend and bedn it if need be. I sure do hope it comes out and will make sure to add oictures when I am done, though adding the pics directly into the post is giving me some issues, I dunno. Maybe I'll figure it out later.
Night all

Give photobucket a try,it's very easy. I used to add thumbnails but finally got it into my head that if others could use it then I could. You create an account on PHotobucket. Then, upload pictures to it. Bring up Photobucket in a separate window from SMF. Switch to that window and find the pic you want to show. Then, when you roll over a pic it brings up a box of 3 or 4 addresses underneath it. Click once on the last selection, it turns blue, then right click and hit 'copy'. Switch back to SMF window. Then, in your post, right click and hit 'paste' and that IMG code is copied into your post. When you submit it, your pic shows up! It's that easy.

Ok pops, so the last line of code is the one I want to copy and paste into my post.
Wasn't too sure.
I spend quite a bit of time traveling through the underworld of the internet and occasionally venture up into the light to view and post things, but this is the first forum I have ever joined and decided to participate and post pictures in, none of the others were truly that interesting so I read but felt no desire to contribute. Here though, I love this place, love to smoke and will gladly share all of my creations with you guys. Thanks for helping me out and pointing me in the right direction.
Feels weird knowing what I know about the internet yet when it comes to something that everyone does such as forum posting I am in the realm of noobs (I'm still -gladly-one of the few left without a myspace, facebook or twitter accnt) though with the help of you fine folks, people like pops6927 will gladly show me the ways of forum posting or any other help I may need, and all with a virtual smile...
Thanks

retrying to add the pic here-let's see...

Ha! Worked like a charm. Thanks pops!

I'm a newbie to all of this, but am thinking of doing an oven conversion myself. I may be wrong, but with the side fire box, couldn't you just leave the main oven heat off and use it as a cold smoker without adding the second box? I want to learn more about the smoke generators. If I understand it, wouldn't that eliminate the concerns with the oven element cycling on and off?
