Halfway up mountain in Tn
I plan on ordering a 732 from Todd tomorrow but...  While I am browsing site :)  Was wondering if it would be worth my while to get an AMNPS package too.  I have the older style analog MES, no vents except drain hole and small hole in back for probe wires.  I have read most of Todd's comments on the oxygen issue with the old MES's so am unsure which way to go.  I am a computer guy so not too mechanically inclined. I have seen some comments about using a small aquarium pump too via the drain hole,, wont the plastic tubing melt ?  Thoughts ?

In my opinion you cant go wrong with an AMNS or AMNPS.  Making it work in the MES is pretty simple

This is a question for Todd!

I'm sure he can help you with this.

He should be along shortly.

That looks easy enough to do.  Thanks for the link,, I had looked before for pic but couldnt find it.  Order has been placed for 732 and AMNPS pkg #3.  Looking forward to some smoked sharp cheddar.  Cold smoking will add another whole world of smoking to MES.  And a thanks to Roller for the mod.

Another vent question :)  Looking at the case this morning and pork butt sitting in fridge, had an idea.  If I drilled some holes for vents,, I could use a fridge magnet for a vent cover maybe.  It holds onto the side of the case well enough and is easy to slide around and cover vent holes.  My question though is where is best place for vent.  1 on top for exhaust is pretty much a given,, I could drill a 3 1" holes in a cluster, then 1 good size magnet would cover them , the sides though, I am unsure.  With AMNPS on order, I will probably swap out the water/chip tray with a regular rack and put AMNPS on that.  Should I put intake air vents below the rack on same side or below on opposite side ?  I would think the airflow should come in below the tray then exhaust on the top.  If it helps,, I have the smoker up against the chimney outside, not much air movement on the back side of it,, the left side would probably get the most air movement.

That was fast Todd :)  Showing a delivery date of tomorrow, maybe it will be here in time for me to try on the PP for work pitchin :)

Thank you

I think you're on the right track!

It will be a little "Trial and Error"

All the aquarium pump does, is add a little air for combustion.  If the intake is low enough, the air has to pass thru your AMNPS.

If the holes are on the same side as the exhaust, the air can bypass the AMNPS and cause a dead zone around the AMNPS.

You're on to something!

Nice Finger!

LOL!

Wouldn't it be cool if this simple Mod really is the answer to a starving smoker?

I am hoping,, though,, I have concerns now about water getting on the inside of the double walls.  I am going to look for a 1" and 1.5" elbow,, either pvc or steel, prefer steel.  I think a 45 degree for input would be perfect,, threaded then I can get it in far enough to where it seals both layers of the smoker.  Top I would go for a 90 degree, that would keep rain from coming in.  Then I will run into the problem of how to adjust,, but I am working on that idea too :)
