OK Joes Help

I have an OK Joes smoker and I am having a hard time keeping a consistent temperature with it. I build a small fire in the firebox and it is really hard to keep a consistent 225 degree cook chamber. The only other experience I have is with my dads custom built somker, which is a lot bigger. I have no issues keeping a steady temperature with it. 

What is the secret to keeping steady temperatures with the smaller SFB smokers? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Seal up all of the air leaks and don't add to much fuel at once. Keep the top vent wide open and adjust the heat with the bottom vent.Then spend some time playing with it. Keep the lid closed.
