This may or may not be an odd question to you all, but I sure think it is....

I recently bought a brand new Backwoods Chubby.....Got it on a cart in my garage.....I wheel the cart out in front of my garage to smoke and back into the garage when I'm finished to keep it out of the weather...

Here's my dilemma....Today I had a nice sized smoke planned....A couple chuckies and a fatty with two slabs of BB's....But the weather didn't cooperate and it started raining so my smoke never got underway...By the time it stopped raining, it was too late to fire the smoker up...

So, would there be a "safe" way for me to smoke in my garage when rain pops up??

Could I take aluminum vent tubing like you use on a clothes dryer and run it out my garage door to route the smoker outside??

Advice/Ideas??

I would say definitely NO...
  1. You risk filling your house with carbon monoxide.
  2. Changing the length of the flu would affect the draw on the smoker and not allow the smoke to escape as the unit was designed causing the smoke build up in the smoker causing the meat to soak in smoke rather than be kissed by the thin blue smoke.
Try instead getting something like this,

When I had to use the MES in the rain, made my self an umbrella plant :).

Stood up a good sized umbrella in a flower pot filled with stone. Worked well keeping the rain of the smoker.

I suppose as long as you have the overhead door up for ventilation, with the smoker just enough inside the open overhead door to be out of the rain. Maybe a fan to keep the smoke heading outside.

I agree RickW-my daughter is a mail carrier-weather don't keep her from doing her job.

I've used both of mine in the rain on many occassion. On the Stumps I use a 4" vent cap that can be found at Home Depot or Lowes...the type that would be used on a gas hot water heater.

Sounds like an excuse to build a covered patio to me! LOL ;)

The new creed for Smokers: "Neither Rain Nor Sleet Nor Snow Shall Keep Us From Our Appointed Smoking"

I saw a thread not to long ago where this guy had 2 smokers inside and made a dryer vent hose with a fan in the end to draw the smoke outside. As long as you can draw the smoke out you should be fine. Thats my 2 pennies

Get one of the EZ Up tents like BeerBQ said. I have one and have used it twice this year due to rain. It poured all day on the 4th and I had my UDS under it and it never got wet.

I would agree that a "rigid" connection of the flue to the exterior would change how the smoker will draw...BUT with that said I would see no reason that you couldn't use a vent hood with an exhaust fan that is ducted to the outside. My friend has a converted refrigerator that the flue is connected directly to the wood burning stove in his shop. when it gets below zero he can still smoke!
Check out this guys setup...pretty sweet man cave!

Before I moved into my current house that has a covered patio, I went the EZUp/QuikShad route. You can sometimes find them on sale for less than a hunnerd bucks and you can use them for other things beside as a portable cover for your smoker. I currently use my QuikShade when I need some shade space when I'm doing car shows.

Here is a pic of the rain cap I used on my GOSM before I picked up my QuikShade.

Watch Craigslist for those Ezup canopys. I have seen several of them for under $50. Then you can set it up on the back patio next to the door - open door, go out tend to smoker, go back inside and probably not even get wet
