I have upgraded to the bigger chip tray in my unit but it seems that every time i put in a tray of chips it only pours good smoke for approx 20 min or so. Is this normal? When it is smoking good I can look inside and it is very nice and hazy....Im smoking at 220 degrees. And it also seems that when a load of chips dies out It takes a long time for the new chips to take off....Am i doing something wrong? I pulled the chip tray inside the unit out approx a 1/4 inch and that seemed to produce alot more smoke inside the unit. Any advice would be great.Thanks-

I believe the wood chips will only last for about 20 minutes or so.

Do yourself a favor and purchase an AMNPS from Todd. You'll never have to worry about chips again. With the AMNPS, each row will provide approx 3 - 4 hours of constant smoke.

X2 on what he said..

I have the MES40 also and what I use is chunk wood just cut it down so it will fit in the tray. It will burn for about 1hr.

Like everyone says, get the AMNPS.  It works great.  Chips will produce alot of smoke but they just dont last long.  Ill probably still use chips in mine from time to time, the AMNPS is the way to go.  When you get it going, you will get hours of good smoke.

Getting the AMNPS will expand the usefulness of the MES. With it not only will you get 10+ hours of TBS when Hot Smoking but it will make the MES a great Cold Smoker for Cheese, Bacon and Cured Sausage. You can't do this stuff with the Chip Tray...JJ

I too have a MES 40.  I went straight to the AMNPS and saw dust for my smokes.  Don't count the chip tray as useless though because chips can still be added if you run out of dust/pellets when smoking.  I.E., you need an extra half hour on the smoker and you ran out of dust/pellets.  Use your chip tray instead of wasting heat opening the door.

Since you don't have the AMNPS, I assume you don't have a Maverick either.  Temp readings aren't the most accurate on your MES as I'm sure you know.  I've had a 19* difference between a mechanical gauge and my MES meat probe.  Once I figured this out, (First Overnighter Smoke) I quickly purchased a ET732.

Happy Smoking
