I have a Masterbuilt 20051311 recently purchased here in Thailand.   With the unit I bought boxes of wood chips/blocks imported from the USA [expensive!!!].   The problem is I cannot get the wood to smoke.   If I have it at a high temperature 400F - no problem but as most smoking is done at around 220F [or fish at 160F] the wood just chars a little producing almost no smoke.   I have tried setting the wood on fire [in the frying pan] on my .stove top but as soon as I put it back into the smoker it goes out.   I have also tried using a base of charcoal but again with the same result.   I keep the vent fully open.

    What am I doing wrong???

Any suggestions / solutions much appreciated.

Normally I would say get an Amazing Smoker smoke generator, but that could be difficult in Thailand.

So it sounds like you got one of the old chip burner units in that "311".

There was a run of chip burners that had an extra piece of metal under the chip drawer that kept the heat from getting to the bottom of the chip drawer. Masterbuilt used to give FREE Replacement Chip burners to the people who got one of those.

Take a look to see if there is a piece of metal under the bottom of the chip drawer, or if it's just an open space under the drawer floor.

If there is an extra piece there, I would call MB & tell them, and they might still send you a replacement "Retrofix".

If there is an extra piece of metal there, and they won't send you a replacement chip burner assembly, get some tin snips & cut that extra piece of metal out from under the chip drawer.

If there isn't an extra piece of metal under there, then see if you can bend your chip burner downward to get the bottom of the chip drawer closer to the heating element. If it's more than a sixteenth of an inch away from the element, the heat won't get to the chip drawer very good.

Or---It is possible that you don't have your chip drawer in properly.

If it looks like the one below, make sure the large part of the drawer slides under the Heating element, and the drawer goes above it, with the heating element sandwiched in between:

So.. The piece with the black scorch mark in the picture above goes under the heating element.

    Hi Bear

Thank you very much for your input.   I will do as you recommend.  What is an "Amazing Smoke" smoke generator.   Maybe I can order on Amazon??
