Hi Folks!
Just checking in to say hello! My name is Scott and I'm from Ohio. I've been wanting to get into smoking and sausage making for a while now. I guess you could say I'm doing the research part now

I was all set to get a MES and then I began to read the reviews

I had myself convinced electric was the way to go for me. I had a charcoal smoker years ago and just gave up. I don't want to sit all day tending. Now I'm more confused than ever! I have some Cabelas gift cards burning a hole in my pocket and want to get started! Any and all advice welcome!!

How to post Qview to Forum:

When you uploading to Photobucket I always use the Large IMG setting, 640 x 480 it is a nice size...

Everyone here enjoys seeing the Qview so be sure to post plenty of pics...

Large ones that us old people with bad eyes can see.

We really like to have newbies here because they can bring in a new propective to how things are done. There's nothing like a new set of eyes to give and new way to make things that little differant to make things alittle better. So I hope you know about the Qview here.

First off, Hello Scott and welcome aboard! Glad you joined us. I don't personally own an electric smoker, but lots of folks here use the MES and seem happy with it. If you don't want to tend a charcoal fire, have you considered a gas-fueled smoker? When I'm not using my charcoal pit, I use a GOSM propane smoker. Very convenient to use, and easy to maintain consistent temps without much labor.

First of all, thanks for the welcome! I'm not opposed to propane, but my concern is the fuel cost. How many hours per tank do you get? I also read about mods needed so the flame doesnt go out with a breeze. I guess they all have good and bad points. If you dont mind, give me the pros and cons as you see them. Cabelas in Wheeling has a great deal on an upright this weekend. What do ya think?

I bought a MES a few months ago and am quite pleased so far. Make sure you get the new model as they have addressed many of the problems mentioned in the negative reviews.

Sorry for the delay in responding to your question. I use a 5 Gallon tank, which at current gas prices costs me around 15 dollars to fill. I usually get somewhere between 30-40 hours from one tank. It varies, depending on weather conditions, as well as what temps you're cooking at. I live in N.E. Oklahoma where we get all varieties of weather conditions, wind, cold, rain, etc. I have never had a problem with keeping constant temps in my GOSM. The wind has never caused a flame-out for me, and we get some pretty big winds at times. Bottom line for me is these are great smokers for the price. For less than 200 you can own a brand new GOSM. The one in the Cabela's catelog looks pretty similar to a GOSM. I can't give informed advice about electric models because I have never owned one, so I don't know for sure how susceptible they are to wind and cold.

Welcome aboard I have had my MES over a month. It works very well I have read the cons. If they happen I will be able to fix. So no big deal for me.
