Howdy,

I'm from TX and I've always wanted to smoke meat.  I've got a Masterbuilt Electric Smoker and haven't even turned it on yet.  It uses wood chips.

I'm planning on cooking a tri-tip tomorrow and I'm curious how long it will take?

Thanks!

Howdy chickenlip5, welcome to SMF!  Glad you are here with the new protein transformation device and ready to make it earn its keep.

Tri tips are best served rare to medium rare.  Smoke it low (200-225F) until the internal temperature on your meat thermometer is 115 to 120F, about an hour or so, then throw it on a hot grill and sear the outside for two-three minutes per side.  If you don't do a reverse sear it looks like a rather unappetizing grey hunk of meat.  Then cover it on your counter and let it rest for 10-15 minutes before you cut it across the grain.

Have fun!

Welcome from SC. It's really good to have you on this great site. Ray has you on the right track, for sure. His advice is always spot on.

Good luck and good smokin', Joe.
