That Gen #2 is a problem child.
I never had that flare-up stuff with my Gen #1 MES, but if I did, I'd be afraid to leave it alone.

If it's too late to take it back, the best thing for you to do is get an AMNPS, so at least you don't have to fight with the chip burner in that thing.

Also don't trust the temp readings either----Think about getting a pair of Digital wireless therms, so you'll know what the temps really are.

Thanks for the advise Bearcarver. Perhaps getting the AMNPS is the way to go.

Thanks Gary s. Much appreciated.

Btw guys, my first ribs out of the new MES were the best I've ever tasted so far. Very pleased how they turned out.
I think my unit runs hot, as others have expressed.

Thinking of implementing something like this (links above) to avoid the flare-up issues with the stock chip tray.

Thanks Seenred for the info. Perhaps someone will chime in that has a 2nd gen like mine and uses a AMNPS. I would be curious where in the smoker they put it.
It seems the best place to put an AMNPS in your Gen #2 MES is:

#1   Remove the water pan from the hole it hangs in.

#2   Get your AMNPS lit really good, and put it in straddling the hole where the water pan was hanging.

#3   Put a foil pan on the bottom rack, above your AMNPS to keep drips off of it.

#4   Put a foil pan on the floor under the water pan hole to catch any drips that the water pan would have caught.

#5   Keep your top vent open fully.

If this doesn't work good for you, someone will give you tips on turning your chip dumper upside down, or removing it, and/or pulling the chip drawer out 1" or 2" to increase air flow.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Bear. Think I'll do just as you said. Which do you guys prefer?: The AMNPS 5x8 tray pellet smoker or the tube smoker?

Well there again it's the generation Gap!!!

I love the 5 X 8 AMNPS, but it works great in a Gen #1 MES.

They tell me the Gen #2 also has air flow issues, and the Amazing Tube smoker works better in that one, so your Gen #2 would probably do better with the Tube. I'd go with the 12" Tube. IMHO

Cool.
Think I will buy this (above link) cheaper, cut in half and crimp in end. Tube it is then.
Thanks for the advise.

The DIY pellet tube works flawlessly, btw. It's definitely the way to go with the gen 2 MES.
Thanks for helping guys. :grilling_smilie:
