I just purchased my first smoker (Brinkmann vertical). I am learning that this is called an ECB. I am very new at this, but that is ok my boys and I are learning together. I have all kind of questions before we do our first run. First question I would have would be how can you tell if the smoker is seasoned properly? I know this sounds simple but this is my first time. I have been looking around the site and I like what I see, just havent had a chance to read a lot of the threads yet. Look forward to getting advice.

Welcme Colorado. Not sure about the proper way to season your ECB but I'd say just get it heated up to a nice high (300) or so temp for a bit ought to do it. While you're at it, that'd be a good time to experiment trying to hold it at a certain temp for a while. That way you'll be more likely to pull off a great smoke first time out.

Lots of great folks here. Ask away. I'm positive someone will be along soon to give a better answer that mine to your seasoning question.

Welcome to the SMF, you're on your way to a smoking summer.

Welcome to SMF glad you joined us. You'll find lots of good info here and some great recipes as well. Seasoning is more of a time thing than anything. Personally I like to wash out the smoker with some soap and water then rinse well allow to dry then spray down the entire inside with Pam cooking spray. Then fire it up and keep temps around 200-225 for about 45 minutes then take it up to around 350 for 30 minutes then back to 225 for another 45 minutes or so. When i say entire inside I don't mean the charcoal pan or burner on a propane smoker. Have fun and happy smoking

Welcome to the forum. Glad to have you. Just out of curiosity, how did you come up with you screen name? Sounds like a character in a book I have been reading.

Glad you "and the boys" found us. I think cleaning then wiping down with oil is a great way to start.

Of course I don't have a vertical so I will defer to the experts.

Sounds like you got some solid advice already so I am just gonna say

Welcome to the family, glad you found the site. There are a ton of good folks with a lot of knowledge floating around in here.

Feel free to ask questions and remember the only dumb question is the one you didn't ask.

Good luck and Happy Smokin

welcome to the SMF, lots of ecb users here, there are several modifications you may want to try.

Hello mudpuppy, and welcome to the forums. Glad you joined us. Seasoning is easy, just takes a little time. Use soap n water to remove any oily residue left from the factory. Then coat with cookin' spray and fire it up for an hour or 2. This is also a good opportunity to test your therms (very important) and practice with holding temps. Good luck and good smokin'!

Welcome to SMF. Glad you joined us. You will learn a lot here about the art of smoking food. Just a word of warning though, it's addictive!

Bassman,
Where I got my screen name was because when I was a kid I use to go and collect them. Now I just like playing in the mud with my 68 bronco, kids love it to.
