I am a family doc in the land of Notre Dame, formerly a Memphian. My entry level 11 year old side box smoker just rusted through. I am in the hunt for competition quality smoker, for home use. I can afford a custom build, but I don't need a trailer, don't need to smoke 30 butts or a whole pig. Prob would smoke 10 butts somedays, but I just want a good sturdy long term build. Thoughts on the side box vs insulated vertical? Am I getting ripped off spending 2-3K on a custom build?
Help please.

Welcome to the forums!  Glad you've joined us.  You've found a great place to learn and share ideas on our favorite pastime...grilling and smoking great food!  There are lots of friendly and knowledgeable people here who really enjoy helping one another.  Just ask when you need help and you'll get plenty!

You can buy some great cookers, both SFB and insulated vertical, in that price range.  I'd say look something like a Lang or Horizon for SFB, and Cookshack or Backwoods Smokers for insulated vertical.  Those are just a few of the higher end companies out there.  You can spend some time surfing smoker forums to find members who use rigs like what you are looking for.

BTW, if you haven't read the SMF "Terms of Service".....please do.  There are some things there that every new member should know:
