  1. Hi all. I'm really just trying to get into smoking meats. I have an old bullet smoker with a propane conversion kit. I couldn't ever get the temperature low enough with that thing so I gave up and put it away and have always used my gas grill to smoke since although I couldn't get it to stay below 300 degrees it was easier to use than the bullet smoker and it's no trouble to put a nice long rack of ribs in the back of the grill with only the front burner on with some wood chips in a foil pouch. I couldn't fit a full rack of ribs in a bullet smoker.

I want to buy a new smoker and I'd like some advice on which one to get. There is a gas smoker forum and an electric smoker forum, but not one for people who don't know which they want. I don't wnat to mess with wood or charcoal, and I'd like to keep the cost down to around a couple of hundred dollars or less. I want to set it and forget it as much as possible. I'm looking at both the GOSM widebody or a similar gas smoker or something like the Masterbuilt electric. From what I'm reading it sounds to me like it's easier to control the temps with propane. Is that true? And I'm not sure which would be more expensive to operate. My guess would be that propane would be more expensive. Anyone have any pointers for me? Mostly I like to smoke ribs, brisket, and pork shoulder, but I'd like to expand my horizons some.

Also, is there a way to spell check in these forums? For some reason I can't even cut and paste into a word processor from this screen. Maybe that has something to do with Windows Vista being on my new machine or something. I've never had this problem before.

Hello , and welcome to the SMF. I don't know much about the "set it and forget it" smokers So I can't help you much on your choices. Someone will be along to give ya some advice. Enjoy your time here, and don't forget to post the pics of your creations![IMG]

Welcome to SMF. I suggest taking Jeff's 5 Day ecourse its free and full of good info. As far as which smoker to get thats like asking somebody Chevy, Ford or Dodge. I have a GOSM widebody and I do like it but I'm sure electric has some advantages as well. Temps are easy to maintain on the Widebody no doubt. Do some reading and make up your mind and go for it. Once your hooked it won't be your last one anyhow [IMG][IMG]

Welcome to the forum. I have a gosm big block and love it. Easy to control the heat. Almost too easy.
  6. Welcome to SMF from the ARK Ozarks.
I love the challenge of using charcoal and wood ... but on the other hand, I love the "set it and forget it" option in my electric when I'm camping.
I have the Brinkmann Gourmet, and love it so far. But only when I have other things to do. But it's limited on space.
But FYI, there are plenty of threads if you search ... lots of info on this site!!!!
  7. I haven't seen the Big Block in any stores, only the widebody.

    Hi FortSmithian,

I'm another new guy here too. I am also looking for at the GOSM and was advised to check out the Big Block. Someone suggested I contact Ganger Mountain. Well my local store told me the the GOSM model 3605BGD was on clearance $109.00. Sounded like a great deal until the told me the only ones available were in stores in Arkansas! My loss might be your gain. If you have a Gander close check them out. You just might find a deal.
  10. Unfortunately the only Gander Mountain store we have is in Sherwood, a town connected to Little Rock. It's more than two hours from me. I'm on the Oklahoma border closer to Tulsa than Little Rock. I think they have these at Bass Pro Shops as well but I didn't see one when I was at the Bass Pro Shops store in Tulsa (Broken Arrow) last weekend. They only had the smaller "Deluxe" model. I guess I could drive all the way to Sherwood, but they have the widebody at a Wlamart right here in town. Is the big block that much better?
  11. I just bought a Cajun Injector Electric Smoker at Academy Sports, which is made by Masterbuilt and appears to be just like the 30 inch MES. I'm seasoning it as I type this and will try to smoke some ribs or something tomorrow, something I can put on at lunch and pull out after work.
