Hello everyone. I am new to the forum and so glad to see a site on the internet like this one. I have been smoking mainly pork shoulder for about 5 years now, but am getting ready to enter a few competitions with a friend of mine. So, if anyone has some advice to pass along that would be great.

Welcome to SMF Trotterhead. Someone with competition experience will be along soon. Looking forward to seeing your posts and comp. pics if you get the time to take em.

Keep Smokin

Good smokin

Thank you. This site seems like it is loaded with information and has members with a wealth of knowledge. Well, as you know I am preparing for my first competition. The one concern I do have is that I don't have a rig - yet. I have only smoked on the traditional standup brinkman and a weber. Is there any suggestions to which rig would be good to use for someone starting off? I appreciate the encouragement and any advice.

Hi Trotterhaed, newbie here too, welcome aboard, great bunch of folks here with lots of info.

Trotter, use what you got. There's lots of guys that compete using webers, green eggs, bullets, drums, and just about anything else that could be made into a smoker. You don't need a fancy rig to make good 'cue, or to compete.

welcome to SMF, trotterhead. you will find lots of info in the appropriate section for what you want to smoke.

Welcome to SMF, Trotterhead. Number of members here that compete. Sounds like we need to expand your repertoire a bit and get you doing some brisket!!
