I have had a Oklahoma Joe with a side wood box for years and have used it a lot.  But lately I've been getting lazy and haven't put in the time with the wood smoker and I have really be mising my home-smoked Q.  I have been wanting to try one of the electric smokers so I just picked up a Bluetooth Masterbuilt 40" from Sams.  I just finished putting it together and am seasoning it now.

It only took 25 minutes to get to the 275 degree seasoning temp.  Actually, it went over temp to about 315 but after another 10 minutes, it settled down to around 275 give or take a few degrees and has stayed there for the last hour.

I would appreciate it if someone could answer a couple of questions.

1. Do I need to drill a hole for my Mavrick 773 probes and where is a good location?

For the initial seasoning, I just poked them through the drain hole until I can figure out how to add them to the smoker

2. The Blue tooth app shows meat temperature and what appears to be "smoke chamber" temperature but the app calls it "current" temperature.  Is there a separate temp sensor for the chamber and if so, where is it?

3. The masterbuilt cover (which I don't have yet) does not seem waterproof.  Is there a waterproof cover for it that anyone can recommend?

This smoker will sit on my back porch so just want to protect it from rain while not in use.

Looking forward to some more frequent smoked meats with this unit and reading this forum.

Appreciate any feedback.

Hi Bill!

 to SMF!

Glad to have you aboard!

I have an older MES, but I just close the door on the probe wires.

Not sure where your chamber sensor is.

Mine sits outside too. I just split a large heavy duty trash bag down the seams & drape it over the smoker, then put the cover over that.

After reading more threads, I saw some folks run the wire down the vent on top so I'm gonna try that.  The trash bag thing should work.  I think I've got some really huge bags (like 50gal) somewhere in the shop.  I may not even have to split it.  Good idea.

Thanks Al.

Good evening and welcome to the forum, from a much needed rainy night here in East Texas, and the best site on the web. Lots of great people with tons of information on just about  everything.
