Howdy,

I'm mike and I am originally from Dallas Texas, but I enlisted in the navy in 2011 and haven't been able to move back. I am currently living in the Northern Virginia area. I have absolutely zero smoking experience but I have been cooking on a gas grill for quite some time and I decided that smoking is the next step. Being from Texas I don't do many things half way. With that being said I am currently looking at purchasing a Horizons 16" or 20" smoker. If there is anybody out there with other Smoker suggestions I would greatly appreciate the input.

An offset smoker will certainly do the job. As someone who has been grilling, BBQ'ing, and smoking for a long time, I always like bigger vs. smaller...if you have the room.  Think like - will a 12-pound whole turkey fit.  Will a whole brisket (flat and tip) fit...and as a Texan - Don't forget the mesquite!

BTW - I used to live in Mansfield, TX (SW Dallas) and the rest of my immediate family is in Arlington and Ft. Worth.  I so miss good TexMex!

I also spent a summer (25 years ago) at Norfolk Naval Base and Norforlk Naval Shipyard as a civilian engineer/contractor during Desert Shield/Desert Storm.  Those places were the most impressive places I have ever seen!
