I would love to get into smoking, since i LOVE grilling. Well i currently use a chargriller (pro model i think), and there is the available side fire box you can buy for it...my question is, would it be a decent smoker if i added that, or do i have to spring 200 for the WSM?

also, where would you put the water?, i never smoked in a SFB type of grill before

Welcome to SMF glad you joined us. You can get the side firebox and do some mods and make that Chargriller into a decent smoker or buy the WSM which is a very good smoker. Either will work tho you may find the WSM easier to keep temps on long smokes. Most of the side fire box smokers don't have a place for a water pan but some people will just set one inside the smoke chamber usually under the grates and others just don't use a water pan in them at all

thanks for the info, i think i will just get the side firefox since i already own the chargriller, and go from there, worst come to worst i am out 50 bucks instead of 200+ for the WSM. Which mods would you recommend on the chargriller?

If you check out the Charcoal Smoker section you should find threads about mods. Since I don't own that model I'm not sure which are the best for it

Frist off Welcome Killme to SMF. Now I would save your money and get a gas Smoke Vault 24". Maybe thats because I have one and have been tring to wear it out for maybe 1 1/2 now and it's still going strong.

Welcome to SMF and good luck on that conversion project.  Be sure to take some qview and keep us posted

Welcolm to SMF,  lots of good info here.  If you buy the sfb, you shoul build a charcoal basket for longer burn times, plus it lets the ashes fall freely and you can empty ash pan during smoking. I use one of the two cast iron grates that comes in the sfb in the main chamber under my baffle on the sfb side to hold small pan from dollar store with water in it, if you have any questions just drop me a pm.

well after reading so many good things about the WSM, i went and ordered an 18.5 one...hopefully its here soon

what are the must do mods (if any) to these things...also do they need to be seasoned too?

yeah mine is suppose to be here jan 4, cant wait, til then ill decide where to start smoking i guess! gives me a little bit of time to read up on this 5 day e-course
