Hi all,

My Name is Trey and I am in Richmond VA for any locals that may want to grab a beer and some BBQ. I have a wife and kid and am getting the entry level Charbroil smoker for Xmas this year, and can't wait to light'er up and get to smoking. I have a Costco membership, so I will probably try a Boston Butt first.

As far as things I enjoy outside of the obvious (BBQ) I enjoy micro brew beers, just about anything that has to do with outdoor sports (fishing, hunting, sailing, boating, hiking, camping, wilderness survival, recreational shooting sports...you name it, I will do it, or want to try it out) I also am a huge music fan, got tons of LP's and a huge 2 channel stereo that the wife hates, but negotiated it to be kept pre marriage so now she just gets the Heisman whenever she starts to talk about how she wants it gone :) .

I would love for you veteran forum guys to point out the "must read" threads for newbies so I don't screw up as much...and anyother advice you may have.

Thanks for the forum!

Trey

Thanks for the warm welcome guys. I am in the Residential Audio/Video/Home Automation integration business, so if I any of you guys need help in that arena, let me know, I am more than willing to share what I know...in trade for good BBQ secrets :)

Welcome to SMF !!!
Your choice in doing a butt is a good choice to start with, as they are very forgiving. Are your plans for slicing or pulling it?

Welcome to SMF, Trey! A good place to start (other than the 5-day ecourse that Triple B mentioned) is with the links in the left column. There's lots of good, basic info there.

You have certainly picked a good place to learn about Q. The folks here are always ready and willing to answer questions so don't be shy about asking.

Make yourself at home. We're glad to have you with us.

Well being that I am from the south...is their anything other than pulled or minced?

I agree, I have never sliced one yet !!! Reason I asked was in case you were looking for smoking and meat temps, but judging from your response you have that covered. If you haven't tried it before, may I suggest when you pull it from the smoker in double wrapped foil with the internal meat temp of 205º, to wrap it in towels and put it in a cooler for a few hours. The butt will be even more juicy and more tender.

Thanks for the input...I am in every sense of the word a NEWBIE, so I only know a little about the temp thing, but I know I have a lot of reading to do before I start...or I might just end up wasting a good piece of meat.

Cuts I am interested in smoking include:

Boston Butt
pork ribs
beef brisket
beef/deer jerky
deer
fish
and anything else I find along the way that sounds good...any suggestions?

Welcome Trey -

If you can fit it into a smoker you can smoke it! AND it if done right it will taste better! Nothing better than smoked foods. Have a lok around, get an idea what you want to do then just ask - we'll be here to field any questions you may have!
