New to BBQ!

  1. Hello!

I am pretty new to smoking meat, and BBQ in general.  I'd like to learn more about it, since my experiences so far have been really positive.  So far, I've smoked pork tenderloin, turkey, rump roast, chicken drumsticks and a pork butt-- all with pretty good success.  I have a 14' WSM, and I love it.  I went ahead and ordered a Masterbuilt digital smoker-- which worked out pretty well.  However, to me, nothing quite beats the taste of a charcoal grilled or smoked hunk of meat.

Thinking about signing up for a KCBS judging class.  If for no other reason, to learn more about BBQ in general.

Welcome to the Forum!  Stick with this forum and you'll have just about every question you can have answered.

As far as taking a KCBS judging class to learn more about BBQ, it might possibly do that, but it's more gonna be about what tenderness to look for in competition BBQ, which is a whole other beast compared to back yard grilling and smoking.  If you do take the class, sign up to judge a few events, the stuff us comp cooks put out can be amazing, but it will also be amped way up compared to what you might cook in your backyard...it's "one bite" BBQ.

You could seek out some small local events where they look for volunteer judges - same with chili or hot sauce events. It would give you a glimpse of the process.

  6. Oh okay, I didn't really think of it like that.  It would probably still be pretty cool, since I've recently gotten interested in competitive BBQ.

  7. Oh, that would be right up my alley!
