What do you guys use to put your wood chunks in?
Also do you use staright lump, or do you mix it up?

Thanks for all replys

I just started Gethent, but I selected the same smoker (recommended by friends). Kingsford markets a nice upright plastic container with a flip up lid made for holding charcoal that I have put my wood chunks in. Keeps it dry, but handy. I picked the container up at Lowes (they carry the smoker too). I suppose one of those plastic boxes from Wally world would work just as well.

I use metal tongs to put wood chunks in the SFB on top on the burning lump.

If you you mean by mix it up, lump and briquettes, yes, you can mix them. Make sure the briquettes are burning well before you put them in.

Hope this helps.

Take care, have fun, and do good!

Hi get the net -

I have the same unit since last December and am becomming quite fond of it! Bottom line with the wood chunks - try all ways to see what works best for you. I was able to summarize what worked for me in the following post - and may be helpful.

http://www.smokingmeatforums.com/for...ad.php?t=19603

As for the charcoal - I find myself only using Best choice (same as royal oak natural lump) - I've tried others - I just seem to get the cleanest longer burns with this type. I seem to get about 1.25 hrs between fills of about 3/4 chimney.

Suggest you make the modifications to your unit if you havent already - they really help with the temp control and if you havent figured it out already - pay absolutely no attention to the stock temp guage as it will be up to 50 degrees off.

*chuckles* Sorry about that misunderstanding....AFTER I put my wood chunks in the plastic container...I take them out and THROW them in the fire box....well, actually it is more like an easy underhand lob (which as I've said I am new to this so I will probably find out this is entirely wrong)...except the larger pieces I am using a large pair of tongs I appropriated from my grill....*checks to make sure he didn't throw the plastic container in last time....whew...*

i just put some chunks on top of each chimney-full of coal each time i fire some up to get em preburned and blackened up a bit (about every hour or so).
Chips I just add to the fire by the handful.
I like lump - I like kingsford too though.

I also have the Kingsford Box.

I used a Cake Pan on my first smoke wrapped it in foil and poked a hole in it. Then I threw that on top of my Royal oak lump.

However. It warped really bad and in one spot even looks to have crumbled. So i am going to be looking for a Cast Iron Corn Cake Pan. Basically looks like a Loaf pan but Cast iron.
