I have had a vertical water smoker from cabelas for about 3 years...Im wanting to get another smoker....and was wondering how hard it would be to go to a Horizonal charcoal smoker...like the Chargriller?

I have a char broil silver smoker so I can not speak on behalf of having a vertical smoker, but I love mine and I love cooking with a side fire box.

The up side is there are so many modifications you can make to a silver smoker and also they are inexpensive, usually $160 range. You can control the heat with the two intakes on the fire box and also with the stack on the opposite side.

The downside is it is heavy so you can not lug it all over the place and that is really about it in my opinion.

Again this is coming from someone with a horizontal smoker and no experience with a vertical, which oddly enough after plugging the silver smoker I have been looking into a vertical as well...something cheap for the smaller smokes on a Sunday afternoon, ya know?

Good luck and you will have plenty more opinions on this forum, trust me, and they will all be good !!!!

I have a ECB veritcal smoker. My neighbor just bought a Charbroil Silver Smoker. It was on sale at Home Depot last week for $119. He got his for $149 though. I honestly prefer his smoker to mine. Mostly for ease of use and I like the air control features on it. There is even a door to clean out ash while your smoking. the ECB is a pain to use in comparison.

I was tempted to buy a silver smoker, but I have 7 grills as it is and can't justify it. lol...I've been putting off building my BBQ Island with a Grand Turbo and a BAR-B-Chef charcoal grill so my fiancee was having NONE OF THAT! lol

the snp from chargriller is a great cooker, granted there not real portable, but if you need that maybe you still have your vertical.i've had two of the snp's with fireboxs and would recommend them anytime all kinds of mods you can make,to be truthful i've never done any except to make a charcoal basket, and i've loved both of mine right out of the box.

When you know how to smoke, you know how to smoke......the transition won't be tough. A couple of smokes to learn the personal preferences and character traits of the new smoker and you will be off and running.
