Hello all

Decided out of the blue to pick up smoking as a hobby since it sounds like a manly thing to do.

Web research and conversing with co-workers pointed me to the WSM as the best all around smoker, especially for a novice so picked up the 18.5" model and some hickory chunks.

Made my first pork butt (screwed up as I was trying to make pulled pork, but excellent sliced pork), chickens (phenomenal), turkey legs (undercooked) and eggs (easy and subtle taste).

My only question, and may seem dumb. Where do you guys toss out the contents of your water bowl after smoking? I don't want to pour it on my lawn because I think the grease will attract critters and kill my grass. Don't want to pour it down the drain because I have a septic tank and was advised to minimize oily fluids.

Thanks alot and it's been a great experience so far!

The green thing to do would be to strain it through some cheese cloth or other suitable strainer and then take it all to the local waste management facility if you have one. Pouring it down the drain really isn't a great idea (septic system or city sewer) because it can build up on the inside walls of the pipes and that's near as bad as a blocked artery!

Welcome from Austin, TX. -- a city big on Going Green. I strain mine and put the liquid in a water pistol to shoot grackles. Noooooo, not really. There's usually very little left. I always line my water pan with foil. I run very hot water in the sink for a minute or so, then pour the little that's left in the water pan down the drain with the garbage disposer on, and continue with hot water. The rest is wadded up with the foil and into the garbage. I also do a weekly treatment down the drain with vinegar. I don't know if the vinegar helps, but it makes me feel better.

First off welcome Tim to SMF. What part of Fla are you I'm in the northeast in Jax and there are a couple of us here from all over Florida. Now I always throw mine in my neighbor's yard he would notice it for all the other sh... he has. You'll like it here cause there are abunch of good folks here that would just love to help you out with just about anything to do with smoking. We really like to have newbies here because they can bring in a new propective to how things are done. There's nothing like a new set of eyes to give and new way to make things that little differant to make things alittle better. So I hope you know about the Qview here.
