Has anyone used the newer Publix lump? I know it used to be made by RO, but not any more. At least I've never seen any RO lump like this. I don't know if it's been discussed or not, as I had to step away, temporarily, from the website.

Anyways, the Publix lump I am getting now, is extremely dense, and comes in rather small pieces (fist size or smaller). Now I won't buy a bag of lump, if the bag has tears, blemishes, crinkles, etc. because I know that the bag has been tossed around/abused. The bag I bought was crisp and looked to be lightly handled.

Now it's not terrible smoking lump, and it's actually a bit better at grilling than smoking, because the pieces are so dense. And while it takes a while for the lump to burn, once the piece(s) are finished, there is quite a bit of ash left behind. Not exactly ideal for smoking.

And surprisingly, the Walmart where I was getting RO, ($6 for 10lbs) temporarily stopped carrying it. That's ok, because now I have to pick up some Mali's Gourmet, which is hands down the best lump I've used, but is quite expensive, at a tiny bit more than $1/lb, versus $.60/lb for RO. I'd still like to have some Publix RO on hand for when the Mali's isn't in stock (it seems to be sold in batches, here locally).

Just curious...

Haven't tried Publix. Walmart here always has RO.

I have found, at least here, that the Publix RO tends to be a little more consistent in size and shape, than the Walmart RO, but there's no denying $.60/lb for lump, so I use it quite often.

Next time I'm in Publix I'll look for a bag & give it a try.
