Just got an MES 30 for Christmas along with the amnps maze. I read the instructions on how to season the MES, my question is since I dont have any wood chips to add during the final 45 minutes how do I season it with the amnps pellets? Should I do anything else other than what the directions say when it comes to seasoning the smoker? Thanks in advance.

Put the MES on its lowest temp setting, open the vent 100%.

Fill the AMAZN and light, burn the AMAZN for 4-6 hrs and you should be good to go.

You can follow the directions of the MES also, if the temp gets over 230-250 your AMAZN will start to burn all the pellets.

This will be a good opportunity to learn about your new smoker.

Have fun and keep asking questions if you have them.

I use the AMNPS exclusively in my 40, at all temps no issue. Quickest procedure, crank the MES to 275, with an empty AMNPS inside and let it burn one to two hours. This will get rid of manufacturing oils. Next carefully remove the AMNPS and let cool. Load 1 row of pellets and light according to instructions. Pull the chip loader and drawer out 1-2", put the smoking AMNPS in the hot MES and let both run at 275 until the maze burns out. You are all set at this point...JJ

Jimmy J,

Where do you place your AMNPS in your 40?   On the rails left side?  Is your exhaust vent fully open?

That's a Good method Jimmy recommends for breaking the MES and the AMNPS in at the same time.

The only thing I would do differently is I wouldn't touch the Dumper or the drawer, unless you have to in order to keep the AMNPS going.

I have 5 years of using my AMNPS in my Gen #1 and a few months of using my Gen #2.5 without touching the Chip dumper or drawer.

In the Gen #1, the best place is on the support rods to the left of the Chip burner assembly, and a fully opened top vent is nearly always best.

Yes, JJ is correct, you would want to get the MES hot to get rid of the oils on the new metal.

I haven't had a new smoker in for ever - I forgot about the new metal oils removal.

Yep...I have used it 5 years and got the most consistent result. Left side, lit end to the wall, with drawer and feed tube 1" out...JJ

Thanks for all the replies. I plan on seasoning the unit tomorrow if there is no rain.
