Hi, my name is Mark and I'm new to the site and to smoking. Just got a Brinkmann Smoke'N Grill for Christmas. I am a leader in a local Boy Scout troop and do a lot of Dutch Oven and campfire cooking and wanted to add Smoking to our menus.
I just put it together yesterday and hope it warms up enough soon for my first attempt, I live along the shore in CT. What would be the best menu for a first timer to start off with?

Welcome to the SMF Markj

You have a lot of reading here and folks to help so pull up a chair and get out the library card :) :D :P

To your question: If time is of no concern a sure winner is pulled pork, baked beans, cole slaw...YUM!....you can smoke the pork butts earlier, pull the meat and store in zip-locks, reheat to serve at any time, that leaves only the beans and slaw to mess with while you have all those "scouts" around

I remeber my scout leaders well and appreciated all their efforts!
Congratulations for making a difference in your scouts lives!

Welcome to the board Markj! Those scouts are real lucky to have you around. When I was a scout, we always lost weight on weekend campouts because the food was no good.

Don't forget the smoked bologna and Eckrich smoked sausage to go with Marvin's menu. It's cheap, tasty, and real hard to screw those two things up. Just smoke 'em till they're hot, and you're ready to go. Any leftovers can be cut up, foiled, and thrown in the campfire in the A.M. for breakfeast.

Let us know how it goes.

Welcome to SMF markj!!! As already suggested, a pork butt is good, cheap, hard to mess up practice that will feed several people pretty easy. Enjoy the forums.

Welcome to the SMF. The fine gents before me have said it all. Again..Welcome.

Markj - welcome to SMF. These are the best people around to help you get started out right. Don't hesitate to ask any questions you have. No such thing as a stupid question here, after all you gotta learn somehow. So jump in with both feet and have a great time

Keep Smokin

Welcome MarkJ. Chickens are a good choice also. Inexpensive, pretty forgiving for a newb and doesn't take all day :) Be sure and keep us posted on your first smoke and take pics for us. Boy, I wish I would have been in your troop :!:

Good smokin

I think I'd do a chicken first .. doesn't have the plateu hang time that briskets and butts have. Rather frustrating waiting that 2 to 3 hours with no temperature change when you aren't sure what your doing yet.

Welcome. You can't find a better source of information and help on the beautiful art of smoking meat! Just wondering, is there a bbq or other camp cooking type Merit badge?

Mark, from one old Scouter to another-welcome to SMF.

Bud, There is a Cooking merit badge, it was one of the Merit Badges that I taught as a Merit Badge Counselor.

Mark
