Hello everyone, it is good to be here. I have a few questions. I am going to be doing a cinder block build. I think I have most of the design down and what i am going to be using . My question was the sheet metals. I am going to probably go about 4 high but have not decided for sure yet. Anyways whatever position the grate goes in, I want to be ably to put apiece of sheet metal 1 block down. The reason is so I can have close heat on the days I want to frill tons of burgers, hot dogs, etc. My question is what gauge metal is good for burning coals? I priced 16ga....will 18 ga work? Also I am putting 2 sheets at the top for a cover...what ga would be best for that purpose?

All of my charcoal baskets for my homemade smokers are made from 18 gauge expanded metal. The largest basket is 13" in diameter. The only issue you may have is the 18 gauge is going to sag unless you add reinforcement to it. Even the 16 gauge will need stiffeners. So figure that into your cost.

I believe the quote said Hot Rolled Sheet. Will that be an issue, So here is what I am thinking of looking at...

#9 3/4 Flat Expanded metal 4'x6' for the grill.

2 18GA 4'x3'.5" Hot Rolled sheet to cover top

1 4'x3'.5" as a coal burning surface for grilling

Thoughts? Suggestions?
