New Member from Upstate NY

  1. Hey guys,

    Glad I found the site lots of great information for my next build.  I just picked up a 420# lp tank and a 100 gal  air compressor tank for a good price.  I need to  decide what tank to use but I know im just going to build both haha. 

    This will be my first LP tank build as I build a smoker last year out of  two 55Gal steel barells.  The smoker did its job but took 10 hrs to do a 10# pork butt.  I was unable to keep the heat up and used 5 bags of cowboy lump.  It was leaking like a seive. hahha 

    Anyway is there anywhere on here that has plans for a trailer for the smoker.  If not has anyone used the cheap trailers from harborfreight.  I can pick this up for $200 .

    Well anyway thanks in advance for the help and hope to maybe meet some of you guys and show that a Yankee can Cue as well haha..

    First of all welcome to SMF. Sounds like you have a great project going. Just in the last few days someone here bought that exact trailor and it's in one of the build threads. Someone who remembers who it was will be along shortly, I hope. I think he had to do some reinforcing to make it work, maybe even changing the wheels, Not sure though. Anyhow good luck with the build.

    From where in upstate NY?  Born and raised outside of Watertown, little hamlet called Adams Center.  Dad owned the meat market there.

     First off welcome Bret to SMF. You'll like it here cause there are alot of really good folks that would just love to help you with anything to do with smoking. Now we like having new folks here to give a new prospective on some of the ways we do things around here. Now if you are really new then I would suggest that you sign up fir the 5-day E-course it free and it will give you the basics on smoking and a few recipes too. Here's a link to it:

    then you will have a method to your newly found madness and believe me it will be a madness. Then when you start smoking things you will have to learn how to post the pictures / Qview 

    here. So here's a link to a tutorial on how to post your Qview so we can see what your doing.

    Now the next thing you have to do is run out and get something to smoke. Then just smoke it and if you have any questions just post  them here and we will answer all your questions that you might have. Oh yea there's no stupid questions we were all there in the beginning and we just really like to help others enjoy the fabulous smoked foods that we do. So again

  14. So I have a question?  What is the best style smoker to build I have just purchased a used propane tank that is 25x48 and another that is 22x40

    Im not sure if I should build a lang style RF with a square 3/16'' box.  If I decide to do that style smoker the box has to be according to the calculator 20x20x20.  With the recent jump in metal prices the 3/16'' plate box will be $100.00.  I would rather not spend that much on a fire box when i only spent $40 on the tank. 

    IF I do go that route I was thinking about lining the bottom with firebrick and using a charcoal basket for the lump charcoal I use as well as the wood.

    The other option is to use a smaller cylinder that I have for the firebox.  The issue with that is the size that the fire cylinder will have to be.  If I make a lang style RF smoker with the smaller cylinder it will hang off the cylinder significantly.  This is going to be a moveable unit but not for the road . I will be making a homeade trailer for the smoker not using the trailer that I mentioned earlier in this post.  I would like to keep the unit compact. 

    I have seen guys on here use a smaller cylinder but instead of making it an offset lang style the simply moved the cylinder (firebox) to the rear and set it lower than the cooking chamber.  Then they made an opening from the fire box to the cooking chamber.  Would this be a viable option?  would it produce as good of a product?

    I think if it was me, I would build a center feed reverse flow. There was one just recently built on here, it is an amazing looking smoker and from what I have read it cooks even better. 

    I will see if I can come up with the link for the build thread. 

    Here is a sketch I was playing with as I was watching the build progress.

    Dude that's quick for a butt, my average is 1.5 hours a pound, quickest but I ever done was 72 minutes per/lb on a 6 pounder.

    5 bags of lump...sure it wasn't broiled[​IMG]

    Just kiddn', anyhow welcome and keep us posted.

    One word of advice make sure to Post Pics or the guys on here will tear you to threads!
