    Hey guys -

This has been a great site to learn by all means, please throw out your 2cents as your read or see things I'm doing and have suggestions!!

I won't lie...I've learned alot and got motivated by BBQ Eng here - granted, my build will be a fraction of his awesomeness...but I'm excited!

After getting a good Spring - well, current out of my 55gal drum smoker, I decided to step up to something alittle bigger, alittle "nicer", etc....

I'm building a double walled / insulated smoker with offset firebox (fire box will run along the rear of the smoker, not side).

I'm just learning welding, so don't look too close at the welds ;) They seem strong, just not to pretty...but I'm confident they'll keep getting better.

Plan is for a 58"x23" (ID) smoke chamber with 30"x20" (ID) firebox. Cooking side will have 1" insulation and the firebox will have 2".
    2 - 5" stacks 19" long.

It's gonna basically be a big rectangle with two doors on the front that open.

This is just the beginnings of the stand/cart. I need to get the wheels mounted on it...lots of work to come - hope it's worth it!

Any tips, gotcha's, etc...send 'em along! Need to get that up on wheels...this things gonna be heavy!!

Looks like a great start. Keep those pictures coming.
  3. Looking good - It will be interesting to watch your progress.

BTW - I have the exact same welder and your welds look fine - it's fairly difficult to get great looking welds with flux-core wire. If I start to weld more often I will be investing in a gas kit.

    Hey Philly Single,

Thank you for the kind words on my build. I am really excited to see your version of an insulated smoker...I like your decision for 2" of insulation in the firebox area. I'm sure that your welding skills will be fine for a smoker...just remember, you can always cut metal away, and add it back if you have to. I see that you have a lot of pieces that appear to be cut to you have plans for your new rig? If you do, I think you will be well ahead of the game. I kind of winged it, and got to do a lot of the design work along the took way longer than it should have.

Please take lots of pics, we all love this stuff and can't wait to see the burn out fire and then the first 'Que.

    Good luck! [IMG]

    Hey guys -

Thanks for the well wishes on the smoker...and Supra :) That Supra is achin' for a big tire this Winter ;)...but I digress.

I welded up one of the smoker sides...well, framed it out and added a brace bar in the middle (it's one of the long 60" sides). Sadly, the pictures are on my laptop at home and I'm out of town :/

BBQ Eng - I do have a plan for this rig, I have it sketched out and revised for the past few weeks, until I was happy with all of the measurements. There's a local metal yard that has great (IMO) prices on cut to order metal. So, baring a major mistake or change of plans on my's really just putting it all together.

Basically, the smoker chamber will be a big rectangle with two doors that swing out on the front (think suicide door style...for you car guys...). The doors will have handles that turn to pull the doors against the smoker...well...against the wood stove rope gasket.

Your off to a good start but one word of advice and keep in mind I'm a drywalls guy so I really don't think it's gonna smoke very well with the way it is now. [IMG] jk
