Hi,

New member.

Just purchased a Horizon Classic 16" Backyard smoker, should be here in 4-6 weeks. First smoker. Also bought a convection plate for it.

Smoker comes with the following:

1 Smoker and side-mounted fire box

2 Cooking grates
1 Firebox cooking grate
1 Firebox charcoal grate
1 Lid thermometer
1 Ash tool

Any other accessory purchases that I should be considering? Extra thermometers for monitoring the meat temperature? Cleaning tools?

Thanks for any input! Hope this is the appropriate forum.

Your first purchase should be a good probe thermometer (with multiple probes). You will need it to monitor meat temp and air temp. The lid thermometer is most likely a cheap basic thermo that won't be very accurate.

Make sure you have a few pair of good locking metal tongs, a good grill brush for cleaning, and some brushes/mops/ etc (i prefer silicone) for sauce too. A good Knife or two. Some wood and a good source for wood. a fire extinguisher ( just in case)

and if you wanna smoke a lot of meat and dont want it all to go bad -- a vacuum sealer.

Most of that stuff will be cheap at like wal mart or a store like that.  You will find the longer you smoke the more accessories you will have or end up buying!

Happy Smoking,

Congrats on the purchase! You will not be disappointed. I bought a Horizon this summer too and I love it.

Any recommendations?

The lid thermometer that comes with the horizons are top shelf. You do need to get a Maverick probe thermometer for the meat and you will be good to go.

Post some pics when you get it.
