It seems smoking and BBQ, as a hobby, is similar to boating.
I rescued a perfectly good Cookshack SM075 commercial unit from a scrap dumpster. Cost me $0 and love it.
On the other end of the spectrum, there is almost no limit to what can be spent on equipment and accessories.

Finding a unit in the $300-600 range should get you a unit that will last several years.
I have no experience with the
Weber Smokey Mountain, but Weber has always been one of those companies known for quality.
Smokin Al's suggestion would certainly be on the list to consider.
Whether you get a rowboat or a mega-yacht, it seems that people in this forum are not equipment snobs at all.
They have common interest in smoking and BBQ and seem to be more than friendly and genuinely happy to help newbies like us.
