Hey folks! Greetings from the Pacific coast...

Since I am the new guy here I thought I would say hello with my first post on the forum.

My family and I are active in Swine 4-H and I have 230 pounds of tasty pig in my freezer along with some elk and venison... I have just started experimenting with curing bacon.

Some of our previous adventures were venison and elk jerky, and venison/pork summer sausages. We also started canning last year as well.  NOTHING beats home canned tuna :)

I have a smoker but it is a little chief and I have found it is not good for much more than making warm smoke because if our cooler temperatures here on the coast :) so I have had to finish everything in the oven. I will be looking for a new econo-$moker so if you have a recommendation I need to know about please send me a message!

My wife and I are changing our diets to the lighter side. I have lost 35 pounds in the last 4 months... So we are challenged to find ways to eat lighter and less junk without sacrificing good food.

Welcome to SMF glad you joined us. You'll find lots of good info and some great recipes here. What type smoker do you think you'd like electric, propane, charcoal, or straight wood splits?

I am unsure... I think electric would be the most convenient... However propane might have more power when the weather is cold and windy here...

Now the next thing you have to do is run out and get something to smoke. Then just smoke it and if you have any questions just post  them here and we will answer all your questions that you might have. Oh yea there's no stupid questions we were all there in the beginning and we just really like to help others enjoy the fabulous smoked foods that we do. So again

Welcome to Your New Addiction

Another welcome! There is a smoker out there for any budget, and it does not cost a lot of money to get you going. Lots of info on here which should help in your decisions. Good luck!

Splat, Welcome. I'm a new guy here too. These folks grovel to help us newbies out. Enjoy your new found home.

I just found a MES 30 (masterbuilt elec smoker)  at WalMart online for 159 and ordered one. Should be in the store on Monday. Seems to be one the popular yet inexpensive smoker folks here use.

Unfortunately I bought a Smoke Hollow #6.... And to my dismay it's a crapper.  On low the temperature is 275 degrees.  I can't believe they sell these smokers knowing full well they are nothing more than smoky ovens. Had to finish my bacon in my oven.  I wonder if I can return the smoker to the store?

I would sure try to return it. Just tell them it is defective and you want your money back. I am not familiar with your smoker, but maybe someone will come along who has had a similar problem, and can help if you have to keep it.
