  1. Good morning everybody. I'm new to the group and relatively new to smoking. I run a Chargriller Duo with an offset smoke box. I'm getting ready to toss on a 9lb shoulder with hickory and applewood. Quick question: I've got 2 bags of Traeger pellets that were given to me, can I toss those on the coals in place of my hickory chunks? Any input is appreciated. I've been on here just two days and already gathered a lot of good info. Keep it up everybody.

  2. [IMG]   Good morning and welcome to the forum, from a warm & partly cloudy day in East Texas and the best site on the web. Lots of great people with tons of information on just about  everything.

Welcome uncle Mac! There is a forum on this site dedicated to pellet smoking with tons of info. I use pellets, but only in an AMNPS tray. It does say on the bag, however, that you can add them to a charcoal fire. You'll have to try it in your smoker to see how it works. My only concern would be not gett as much smoke.

  4. Thanks Steve. I'm giving them a whirl. Pretty good for quick hickory smoke but burns up fast. Ideal for me since I tend to overwhelm with hickory and mesquite. I'm using mainly applewood with some hickory thrown on sparingly.
