Well, here in Buffalo it's currently about 20°F. What better weather for BBQ?

Actually, I'm new to the whole world of smoking meat. I love BBQ & my mother-in-law decided to buy me a smoker for Christmas. (I love you Mom!!) I just sured the smoker this past weekend & I am itching to take it for a test run. From what I've read, pork shoulder is fairly forgiving to newbies, so I figured that that would be a good place to start.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to reading through the posts here. I have a lot to learn.

    Hey Grande!

Welcome, I am from Niagara on the Canadian side! I am still a newbie so I will leave advice for the pro's but I have to say you have found the HOLY GRAIL of smoking here. These folks are awesome and quick! I did some steaks and posted a message and by time I hit refresh I already had advice on how to proceed!

Welcome to the SMF, best smokin' site on the net. Congrats on your new smoker, what brand is it? Regarding the pork shoulder, they are foregiving. Try some ABT's when you have the chance, you have a lot of leqdway and variety. Good smokin'.

    Welcome to SMF !!!
Pork shoulder and butt are good choices for 1st smokes. Also meatloaf, fattys, ABT's and Dutch's wicked baked beans just to give you a few more ideas for latter smokes.

Welcome to the site- As far as pork butts go your right, you can do just about anything to them (and I have) and they still come out great!! very forgiving.

Not only are pork butts forgiving, but they're generally pretty cheap, so you can forgive yourself as well!

Welcome Grande! I'm not sure about what ya meant by "sured the smoker", but I think ya meant seasoned it? Good thing to do. HEre's a recent thread on it: http://www.smokingmeatforums.com/for...ight=seasoning

The 5 day ecourse is a great tutorial on the basics and some tricks and tips too.

    And thanks for Hasek. ;{)

Thanks for all of your replys. I actually live in Lancaster, Fred. So I'm not too far away from you.

I signed-up for Jeff's e-Course yesterday. I'm looking forward to doing some reading. I really wanted to try & get a smoke in this weekend, but my wife & daughter are going out of town, so it will just be me & my 2-year old son. I'll probably wait until next weekend. Pulled pork sandwiches for the Super Bowl sounds pretty good.

The smoker that I have is a Smokey Hollow electric unit. I realize that it's not the best for the purist, but I figure that it will be good to get me started.

Actually, I have one question. I read the thread on seasoning. When I "cured" my smoker I coated it with vegetable oil & let it run at max. temperature for 2-1/2 hours. Was I supposed to put some water & wood chips in there?
