Been reading these forums for the past couple hours because I got a deal on a smoker due to black friday (or should say black Thanksgiving lol).  I have been wanting a smoker for awhile and the wife finally gave me the OK.  The problem I have after reading the forums for the last couple hours is that maybe I did not get as good of a deal as I was thinking.  I bought a new MES40 gen2 for around $250.  I guess it is still a good deal but I hope I can work through the problems I have been reading on here that comes with them or maybe I will be a lucky one and not have any problems (fingers crossed)!  After reading through here today I did also purchase a AMPNS and a Maverick thermometer.  Everything is not set to arrive until next Tue so I will see how it goes when it gets here.

If any MES40 Gen 2 owners have any tips or recommendations it would be greatly appreciated!  I keep hearing the bad but I would also appreciate some of the good!

Bear, this is my first post but I already want to say thank you!  I have been reading a lot of your posts and already appreciate them, especially your "step by step" Index that I found.

Todd Johnson. I am grateful for your review on the Gen 2.  It does suck that your located outta MN though because now I have to pay sales tax on all my upcoming orders!  If you happen to read this, have you heard anything (since you are a known representative in the business) if MES has changed anything recently on the Gen 2 that I can eliminate from your review of the Gen1 vs Gen2 post that I found.  Your last reply in that post was nine months ago and a lot of stuff can change in that time period.  I did find your detailed instructions on where to place the AMPNS on the Gen 2.  I would also like to know your recommendation on whether to put on a 45/90 or a T for the exhaust, I believe one of your posts said to put on a 45 but then I read a different member that said they put on a T and had some form of basin on the lower section to catch some accumulated moisture.  Also, do you recommend the mailbox mod for the AMPNS or just place over the water tray slot?

Thanks in advance to everyone for any recommendations and for the knowledge that I have already acquired from reading forum posts.

John,
Welcome, from southern Ohio, to the best forum on the internet if you are looking to learn how to BBQ/smoke/brine/cure/inject. Well you get the picture if you can do it to something you put on a plate to eat then someone here has probably done it then smoked it. Use the search bar at the top of the page and you will be led to the answer to most every question you can think of. If you don't find the answer there then just post it and someone will chime in with their opinion on the subject.

Looks like you have done some homework on your new smoker!! I to hope you got one of the good ones!! You have ordered the two items that will help you the most when using your new MES, The only advice I can offer is be patient, learn your smoker and all of its quirks, Start a smoking log and put all of the pertinent info in there for future use.
