Going to try to smoke something this weekend for a football tailgate. What is something a rookie can/should try for about 20 Purdue fans. Thanks!

Dave

Hey Dave, Welcome to SMF. I would suggest pulled pork. It's really pretty easy & foolproof. Just search basic pulled pork & follow the instructions. Good luck, whatever you do!

I like the pulled pork idea. If I can ask, is smoking a brisket something I should try for a first time? I will be at our spot tomorrow at about this time and am usually up most of the night shooting the you know what with my friends and drinking adult beverages. I am kinda leary on doing this but thought I should ask for future reference. Love this site and look foward to the vast amounts of info to read. Boiler up1

Welcome to the forum Dave!

IMO pork shoulder or butt is more forgiving than a brisket....but there is nothing wrong with doing a brisket. There are a lot of good tips here on the forum to help you through it.

Good luck this weekend!

Welcome to SMF. Looks like you already have your suggestions for the game. Good luck.

thanks to all. I think I am going to like this site!! I think I will do a fatty for breakfest the next time we have a late game!!

Dave welcome to SMF we're glad you joined us. If your going to be up all night I think I'd do a butt then while your at it throw a fatty or two on thru out the night to have something to snack on. That would keep your friends from bugging you about when its going to be done a little. Whatever you decide to smoke have fun

Hey DCDave,

What kind of smoker are you using? Also, what kind of budget are you working with? If you follow the "sticky" post by meowey in the pork forums ( http://www.smokingmeatforums.com/for...ead.php?t=8111 ), you can make a perfect pulled pork that should be fool proof if you follow the directions. Pulled pork is very economical and everyone likes it. If you have the money in the budget, baby back ribs done the 3-2-1 method are virtually fool proof and everyone LOVES them. You will definitely want to practice with something before your party. Chicken is also cheap and easy. You could practice with a chicken and depending on how big your smoker is, you may be able to smoke enough chicken for everyone (about 10 it sounds like). Good luck and post some pics if you can.

Another Hoosier here - welcome Dave! Pulled pork is on the menu for me today. Brisket is my favorite, but it has a tendency to dry if you don't watch it. Nothing like the present to try though!

Fatties and ATBs are excellent and fairly simple to smoke. They do take some time to prep.

Good luck and post some pics.
