That's a great deal...JJ

Here's what I did to my firebox. I had some large metal "objects" that I placed inside. It helps control the heat loss and reduces the amount of fuel I have to use.

Plenty of air still passes through.

I also add a water pan, I haven't did the reverse flow thing yet.

first things first   added a thermo  right by the handle   got it close to the grills so it reads temp at food level

I used an old grate from one of my gas grills. If you notice it lifts the coals much higher and allowing more air underneath. It's higher than normal above the bottom of the firebox. I just beat the coals down through the grate every hour and add another half chimney of brickets. That keeps it burning for another 45-60 minutes.

Rick ,a curved piece of metal ( doesn't have to be real heavy guage ) to match the curve of the FB and slide it under the grate ( on the bottom ) and each time you add fuel , grab the metal with a gloved hand and dump it in your ash can , oh, and leave a tab bent up to grab when you open the FB so you don't get your eyebrows singed.

I forgot to say , I have basically the same unit , about 10 y/o . Ilove the little gal , she's a REDRIVER model with a stainless shelf on the front where you have a wooden one...

Here's my lil' Girl on the left. She needs a handle and some rust protection , ( grease ) , but other than that She's a great Smoker. I reversed her too and she does fine. Only problem , the FB door is a little leaky.

Have fun and .....
