Hey all, I'm brand new to the smoking game and looking to buy my dad a propane one for Christmas. I've searched all the brands from master built to Cajun injection and am having a hard time picking one. My budget is $200 and only need one big enough for me and him to smoke something occasionally. I haven't been able to figure out which one to pick considering the build quality and thermometer problems that come with some smokers. If anyone has any advice I would appreciate it!! Thanks!!

A lot depends on the fuel you want to use there are a lot of good smokers for that price range. Main thing to look for is something that can hold a steady temp. for at least 6-8 hrs. without having to futz with it to much.

I personally use a Weber Smokey Mountain (WSM) it is the set-it-and-forget-it of charcoal/wood smokers, very easy to use and has a small footprint while still holding a decent amount of meat. There are 3 sizes and price points to choose from.

If you are handy with some basic tools you can build a mini-WSM or UDS (Ugly Drum Smoker - just a name they aren't ugly). Both can be built for less than $100. The mini is nice for small stuff, the UDS is full sized and works great.

Good luck!

thanks for the advice! I was looking for a propane one, any idea on brands?

I believe the GOSM is a popular one..... but hopefully one of the propane users will be along to answer that better.

I have a Masterbuilt Pro Duel Fuel. This is a nice little smoker that will use propane and/or charcoal and is within your budget. Can be used right out of the box or some easy mods can be done to make it a little better. Use the search on here for more info on this smoker.
