Do you think this would work?
It is to increase the cooking area of a UDS. I drew it in cad so if it work I'll post some dimensions.
I've got a few drums to mess with, but I got frig I want to modify first. If it ever warms up around here.

i've seen plans similar online some where but the bottom drum was horizontal as well...i like this look better.

Looks like a good idea.. kida expands the cooking area of a uds. I might even think to use a 35 gal on the bottom so a tad more of the heat is forced into the cooking chamber...

And i wouldn't make a door on the bottom, too hard to seal. If the top drum is mated with the bottom drum at the diameter, then you could put a basket down there through the cooking chamber with the racks removed..

Yes, good idea about the basket. One less place for excess air to worry about. What about a single stack in the back? 2 3" stacks too much?

Very nice design by the way

Just my honest opinion as to how my UDS works. If you have a door for your firebox, I have one on mine, I would only use a 1/2" ball valve on each side, more than plenty, oxygen will seep through the door ya need to compensate for this. I would make your firebox much bigger, maybe 16 x 8, that would enable you to add coal and wood by way of the door. Only other thing is would it be stable? Other than that, nice job!

What has been said is good. but I would also say lower the exhaust holes so the smoke goes up and then rolls back down. I would think you will need a lot more fuel for this to run.

It looks like a decent foundation to start from. If you don't put the door on the bottom, won't you have to remove the racks every time you want to add fuel?

Dropping the stack inlets also sounds like a good idea to explore.

If it works like a drum, why the need to add fuel? I'll bet this design will be as fuel efficient as a regular drum or even more..

I think you would want a diffuser plate/water pan or something between the vertical drum and the cooking chamber to prevent a hot spot in the center.

Are we still talking about the smoker??

As little airflow as a drum has and with dual exhaust, I think this will cook very evenly. One of the beauties of the drum is the separation between the food and the heat source..

i love it! i just started my first uds and it's not too late for me to change gears and try this design. if ya post or pm me some dimensions i'll be the Guinea pig! and i'll post the qview. i got plenty of barrels etc. to work with.

Mine is the same type of design, although my nozzle is but 6" diameter. I think you'll be finer than frog hair.
