Found a Oval Roaster....not a DO....but a Cast Iron Roaster for sale in a shop here.  I do not know what manufacturer this logo comes from.  I don't want to spend $80 on a cast iron piece from China.

    Any Ideas?

I have talked with the folks from Lodge...and they said it's not Lodge.  BUT...asked me to send a pic to them and they will try and help too.

    Thanks!

Hey Kat, This is just a shot in the dark but the Stamp looks like a LC to me. could this be something old from Le Creuset?

I don't know but it sure looks old and well made. Isn't Chinese cast iron a fairly recent introduction to the US market..JJ

  4. The Raised "G" logo is from Griswold.  The #9 is a large roaster, big enough for a good size turkey.  It is heavy - the roaster weighs around 25 lbs. - add a big turkey and get a forklift to get it out of the oven!

    I saw a #5 (smaller) on e-bay for $35.

There is a blog site called Wagner and Griswold Society where you can find some more info.  According to that, $80 for a #9 is a very good deal - they usually run $300

Griswold (and Wagner) were cast iron foundries in the USA.  Griswold was started in Erie, PA.  Do a search on "History of Griswold" and you can get more info.

  5. well - I may be changing my mind.  I did a search for Griswold logos and none looked like your, but I have seen articles that talk about a logo just like this on a Griswold

  6. According to the Le Creuset web site - they have always done enameled cast iron.

That is what I was thinking as well, But thought I would take a guess at it.

La Creuset a Dansk Ware have only done the enameled ones for ever.  I have the "Red and Blue" books that show all the info and collectors info and prices for cast iron...Wags, Gris, Volrath, Walpak, Lodge, Martin Stove and Iron, and so many more.  None have this marking.  I have seen a few in the Ebay area...but no one knows this marking/logo.  Dont think it's from the Chicago foundries either.  (as you can tell....I am sort of a collector)

Chef Jimmy...in the mid to late 50s/60's is when the Chinese and Japanese companies started making things...and some are "fakes".....that were meant to look like ones from the Foundries here.  Leads and other not good metals were added to the slugs that made up their Cast Irons for the skillets and such.

I have talked with someone at the Lodge Company...and she asked me to send her a pic of the Logo and she would try and help.  Haven't heard from them yet.  It does look like an L with a C wrapped around it....or a C with the L under it.

Thanks for helping.....driving me nuts cuz it's a MYSTERY!

Don't know if this means squat.....

    Other Usage of Letters

There is still another use for letters, seen employed extensively by Lodge Manufacturing Co.-- as model designations. Although many are self-explanatory, some are a bit cryptic, unless you happen to have purchased the piece new and had the Lodge labeling or packaging for reference. So, here is a listing of most of them:

Dave....do you use the Cast Iron Collectors website too?  I find a bunch more useful info there than the Wag/Gris website. Doug the owner of that site has not seen the logo on that roaster before.

Kat, that is most likely a "molders mark" could be almost any brand.  Doubt if they go to the trouble in China.

It is a gorgeous piece....a bit pricey for it to just hang in my collection and not use.  BUT....I reallllly want it because it's different.

Love the logo....and so far there are no other markings on the piece at all....but that and I know it's a #9 roaster.

Could be....I am going next week to pick up a Dutch Oven they are holding for me.  So I will try and get a better picture of it.  I tried a close-up with my Cell...and  I must have been shaking when I was squatting down to take pics...and the close ups were blurry.

For the DO below....they only want $25.00 for it...and it's coming home with me.

Will take a little bit of elbow grease....but will be well worth it.

Little or no rust too.  Looked solid and was a great price.
