I am totally new to smokin so i basically know nothing, i went out and purchased a new masterbuilt cookmaster electric smoker on friday. I put the smoker together on friday night as per the instructions, on saturday afternoon i had the time so i decided to preseason my little smoker as per the directions said you should. I turned the heater on to med heat running it for two hours, then for the last hour i placed 1 cup of dry wood chips in it to smoke away. After an hour i came back opened the door to find no smoke visible? Totally perplexed i opened the top of the wood chip tray while still in the smoker to see a small whisp of blue smoke come out of the pan , (but we are talking a minamal amount), and about 1/3 of the chips were black, burnt in appearance but upon closer inspection not all the way through, just the outer layer of the chips. If you were to break them in half they would still be unburnt in the middle? I thought this was odd but i"m not sure how much smoke you are supposed to have or how much is required to actually smoke something? I will be primarily be smoking jerky, summer sausage, and sausage if that helps also i was using char-broil chips in it ,i should add, i tried to smoke again this am with the same results, just wondering how much smoke is enough or if this sounds right to anyone else?
