Thanks I'll give that a shot.  I will try to get it all my little things done in the evenings this week and hopefully toss some food on it next weekend.

Chef, I will say the only thing about this build that was the slightest bit difficult was removing the liner from the barrel.  I was working on a pretty tight budget and trying to mostly utilize what i had laying around so I ended up doing a little more work than necessary to complete one.  If you were to get a non-lined barrel and pay a welding shop to make the basket or order the big poppa basket it would take you very little time or effort to complete.  I will hopefully get the chance this coming weekend to get some food on it and see if they live up the hype.

Ok, Does anyone have any suggestions or good ideas for the exhaust?  I've seen some people have pipe coming up off the 2" bung.  I couldn't find black pipe that large at my local Depot.  Is PVC safe to use for exhaust?  If not what should I look for or do I even need to use any pipe at all and just run with the open bung?

On my last UDS I just left it as is, and I plan on doing the same with the one I am building now. I would avoid PVC.

Some folks don't add an exhaust pipe......  just the bung....  or they drill small holes around the top end of the drum so rain don't get inside......

I used 4-1" pipe nipples and put elbows on them.

Thanks, my lid was solid.  ( no 2" bung )

That looks pretty cool!  Mine has a 2" and a 3/4" bung both.  In the test burn I had them both open.  I have a steel plug for the 3/4 but the 2" had a plastic cap which i do not want to re-use.  So I will need to find something to plug the hole when its not in use to keep unwanted things out of there.

They are 3/4", not 1 ".  Sorry     1" would work thou

If you're not adverse to ordering something online, Grainger dot com has 2" black pipe and parts. They also have the metal "Drum Plugs"  $1.97...

My lid on my current UDS has the 3/4" and the 2", but both caps are metal so I just use them to plug things up.
