I have a barrel that had windshield washer fluid in it.  It has a orange / rust colored coating in it.

I have to cut the top off of it, where do it cut it at?  I want to reuse the lid.

I am going to need lots of help on this from you guys.  I am counting on the forum members to get me through this.

I want to do this as cheap as possible.

I thought you said you had access to barrels with removable lids?    I've seen folks cut the top off and make it work but you'd be better off doing a removable.   Have you used a can opener that cuts from the side?  It's the same concept.

They wouldnt let me have any with removable lids...LOL

Dont have a can opener that works on the side.

Any idea where to cut it?

Was thinking about right below the rim and then bent the top of the barrel and it might still fit.

I could be wrong but i was assuming to cut with a jig saw (metal blade) right along the same path that a can opener would cut a can on the side right near the very top.

That's what I thought.

Thanks

I will. Trying to post pics.

Wont get to work in it til the weekend, but a couple of questions.

1) will the orange inside coating burn off

2) can I use regular steel hardware and metal to build with and then do a final burn off?

9 ga. is the best and a piece 12" X 36" is about the right size if your going to make it round and use a grill for its bottom.

Ok I will keep looking.

Thanks

Yes i believe that basket should work fine...definitely bigger than mine is,  should work out very well.

Yes the orange coating will burn off just fine but you'll still have to wire brush with angle grinder or drill.

So how did the cutting the top off go?  Don't freak out if it doesn't work out because there are a ton of 55 gallon drums out there with removable tops.  Keith

Didn't cut it off yet.  Looking at all my options

I have two barrels that I am going to make into UDS. I found a local sand blasting company that will do them inside and out for $20 ea. I'd ask around. The last barrel that I burnt out was awful The putrid black smoke couldn't have been good at all!
