So as some of you all know I am going for my first boston butt this coming weekend. Several of the guys on this site have been VERY helpful posting in the thread I started about 4th of July boston butt. Gotten some good info through PM's too. I thought I was all set but then got to thinking and reading. My plan was to go to Lowes and take advantage of the Kingsford blue bag sale. But considering this pork is going to take anywhere from 8-10 hours as an estimate, wouldn't it be better to use a different kind of charcoal? I'm doing it on a 22" weber kettle grill using the snake method. For longer smokes would it be better to drop the Kingsford and maybe go with Stubbs? Lowes has the 15lb bag for $9.99. I was reading that it burns longer, less ash, and provides more heat. What are your guys opinions? Just stick with my original plan, or use the Stubbs for longer smokes and use Kingsford for shorter things like chicken? I seem to use the lump charcoal for burgers and steaks because it burns very hot and doesn't seem to burn long either. Makes me wonder how some guys actually do smoking with lump. Semms to burn pretty fast to me. Any help is appreciated.
