Haven't posted for a few days do to a drunk/stoned driver rear ending my wifes truck. Wife is in pretty bad shape but is seeing some good medical folks. She was going 30-40mph, other driver was going 90+ in a Chrysler 300.... The previous photo shows her truck attached to the trailer with the load of steel. This trailer requires a 2" ball and it opened that Chrysler like a soda can. Police call that ball and hitch a Stinger..... Wife told me to get back in the shop, she wants to see the smoke rolling.... So here I am.....Checking my numbers twice, cut once....

Please keep my wife in your prayers....

Alaska,

Very sorry to hear of your way better half.  Give her our regards each time you take a break from the shop.

Hope she is getting better and everything is O-K   In our prayers

Gary

Hey Folks I'M back.... I appreciate everyone keeping my wife in your prayers, she has made a great deal of progress and I driving her crazy. Her instructions are, get back to your build

Remember I'm using the air tank shown above Circumference 77 inches /  Between Welds 35.5 inches

I have my numbers and would appreciate it if someone would give it the once over.

Using the circle calculator this is what I came up with.

Radius - 12.32

Segment Height ED - 6

Chord AB - 21.151

Apothem OE - 6.32

Central Angle - 118.27

Arc AB - 25.432

Circumference - 77.409

Segment Area - 66.823

Triangle Area - 66.837

Sector Area - 156.66

Total Circle Area - 476.84

Cooker Chamber 80 gallon = 6160.00 cubic inch

Fire Box Size 20in height - 20in width - 21in length = 8,400 cubic inch

Chimney Diameter - 4.00in

Chimney Length - 33.44

Firebox Air Inlet Opening - 25.20in

Circular - 2.50 = 4.91 Sq. in

Number of openings - 5.14

Fire Box to Cook Chamber opening area - 67.20

Number of opening - 5.03

With all this being said would my RF Plate be 21in wide? Would the RF Plate be 5in from the bottom of the CC?

Using the circle calculator this is what I came up with.

Radius - 12.32   ........................................12.0" Radius ........... 24.0 inside diameter figuring a 1/4" wall

Segment Height ED - 6 ..............................5.5"  height above the bottom of the CC

Chord AB - 21.151....................................20.17"  RF plate width

Apothem OE - 6.32

Central Angle - 118.27

Arc AB - 25.432

Circumference - 77.409...........................75.4"

Segment Area - 66.82   ............................78.2" to reduce friction

Triangle Area - 66.837

Sector Area - 156.663

Total Circle Area - 476.84

Cooker Chamber 80 gallon = 6160.00 cubic inch.....................................................................18,480 cu. in.

Fire Box Size 20in height - 20in width - 21in length = 8,400 cubic inch..........at least the width of the RF plate for ease

                                                                                                                        in fit up........

Chimney Diameter - 4.00in........................................................................................................      4" I.D.

Chimney Length - 33.44   .........................................................................................................      25"-30" above the CC

Firebox Air Inlet Opening - 25.20in ...........................................................................................  18.6 sq. in.

Circular - 2.50 = 4.91 Sq. in

Number of openings - 5.14 ....................................................................2" X 3" = 6 sq. in. ..........3 each required....18 sq. in.

Fire Box to Cook Chamber opening area - 67.20   ........49.6 sq. in.... X 1.5 (to reduce friction) = 74 sq. in...use  78.2 sq. in.(above)

Number of opening - 5.03......1

With all this being said would my RF Plate be 21in wide? Would the RF Plate be 5in from the bottom of the CC?

20 1/4" wide and 5.5" from the bottom...

That's what I would think about ..... Firebox could be bigger for the cold weather stuff BUT, you do not have to change any dimensions if you make the FB bigger.....   everything else stays the same......

Hello, and Welcome from East Texas. This is a great site, lots of good information and great people.

Sounds like you are off to a good start and a lot of fun. I really enjoy the building process and watching it come together.

Gary

Thanks Gary...... I'm going to start the firebox today but before cutting the hole to connect it to the CC I wanted someone to check my numbers I posted earlier....

On this 80gal build should my FB to CC opening measure 5in from bottom of tank up? Is there a certain distance from the right side of the tank inward that this same opening should be? I believe the measurement of the opening should be 21in wide, 5in high and another 5in deep. What do you guys think?

Any updates or pictures ?

Gary
Gary, Been very busy taking care of my wife since her auto accident. Also have been getting things squared away for the upcoming winter. We have had a great deal of rain and the snow has been working it's way down the mountain. I did go by the steel shop to get some more scrap for the build. I should have the pipe cut for the rails on my fence which will allow more room in the shop. Will begin posting some photos as soon as I get started. One thing that I am planning do is to take Daves suggestion and insulate the FB. I came across a very good build on the forum where a guy insulated his..... Jerome

Hey Jerome, hope your wife is getting better, down here in Texas we forget about the things you have to do for the winter. The insulated firebox idea is great. I had posted before the next build we do will include an insulated firebox. So take care of your wife, get winterized and let us know when you do start your build.  Good luck

My wife is taking it a day at a time and since she enjoys the outdoors being down at this time of the year is difficult. I appreciate the kind words! Check your PM when you get a chance.

OK folks Im back.... Wife is doing better and I got all the saddles cut for my fence rails. Now its time to get on the build. Here are some photos that I decided to post so you would not think I was just sitting around waiting for the snow on the mountains to make its way to my front porch. Please take a look at the drawing and share your thoughts. I am going to have an insulated box on this build. Dave.... I appreciate all the answers to the many questions.

Im not sure if you can look at this in a larger format so you can see the measurements. I have included the baffle and was not sure how far into the CC and FB it needed to be or is it necessary.

You can see my soon to be Smoker lingering in the background!

I could not enlarge your drawing, so I could not tell if you RF plate was there. If it was I would extend it all the way to the weld on the opposite dome.  Looks like you are going to have a really fine smoker, especially with you skills.

Gary

Gary... That was my first time using that program while at work and I got to a point where I wanted to extend it and the devil on my shoulder said try it and I will erase everything.... My intentions are to run it to the weld like you and Dave have mentioned....
