I was smoking a 9 lb butt Saturday and my thermometer said the temp on the meat was 148, when I checked it again about a half hour later the temp dropped to 142. i looked at the control panel and it said the temp was 82. I shut it off waited about 2-3 minutes and reset temp(240) and time. When I checked it about 20 minutes later it said 82. I had to take the butt off foil it and put on my weber charcoal to finish it. I called masterbuilt this morning and they said I had to cut the cord off and pop the plate off that has the model and serial numbers on it and send it to them. They said they would send me a new body kit that it does not include racks, pan ect but I won't get it until mid to end of May. Any one else have this happen and if so what did you do? Thanks

Geeez, another MES bits the dust. Threre are several posts here of the same nature. For the record, which MES do you have and how old is it?

I would be hard pressed to recommend this smoker even thought mine is working okay for now, the food coming out of it is good and the price was right, maybe??

wow, End of May. that seems like a long time to wait. I don't think I would be able too. I hope it works out ok.

I bought mine at Sam's with a 3 year warrantee and just brought it back and got a new one, no questions asked.

I got mine around July/August and cannot find the receipt. My son was caught chopping(hatchet) on the cord so I'm wondering what's going to happen when I send the cord back to them and it's not the original one? Do ya'll think I can do the drill out the back panel thing or go ahead and send the cord and ID tag? Thanks all.

That's the catch. They said to send the cord and the id tag with the model and serial number then they will process the info and send me a body kit around the middle to end of may? Not sure what to do, I read about a few people fixing it themselves but not sure how to go about it.

How about taking a picture of the back of the unit showing the repaired cord attached and including it with serial plate and cord. In my dealings with MES they were nothing less than fair, in fact much more- they replaced my unit with a new one and it was well out of warranty.
Curious, where did you buy and is it in warranty? Also there are threads dealing with the repair that can keep you in chow while you wait for the replacement unit. The repair is fairly easy, maybe someone will post it again.

They will not send anything out until they get the plug and serial plate back.
I was supposed to get my body kit in January after calling in October.
I never sent those parts back until last week and got a call from Masterbuilt they would be sending me a brand new smoker, not just the body kit.

Woke up today and went out to the front porch and guess what sitting there???/ A brand new "body kit" from Masterbuilt. I have not sent anything to them as they said it would be nid to late May before I would get it and I was planning on drilling out the back of it this weekend to see if I could fix it. Should I still send them the plate and the cord or keep it "just in case". Thanks all.

Ktotheb,
I got a call from Masterbuilt asking me what kind of "feet" I had on the bottom of my defective 40"er.
I told the lady I had removed the feet in favor of casters and had no idea.
She told me they would be sending me a brand new unit instead of the body kit. I think this was because my unit was only 2 months old and Sam's had no more in stock.
That call was on the 15th of this month, so I'm hoping I'll be getting my new smoker shortly.
Did they send you the new model with the window?

No unfortunatley they send me the black "body kit"(no window). I have to put the temp control box, racks, water pan, wood chip loader, wood chip pan and door from my old one on the new body kit. They have not called me to send the cord and ID plate back so I was wondering if I could keep it in case...? Good luck and they may drop one off at the door??? I was very suprised as the one time that I spoke with them they said to send them the cord and ID plate and the body kits were on back order and it would be mid to late may before it would get to me. I was under the impression that once I sent them what they asked for then they would send me the kit. I'm VERY happy to be able to get smokin' again.

You should send it in case you need help in the future other wise they may look at your file and say tough luck.

The Cord would be EASILY replaceable and who cares about the plate. Just drill out the rivets and sent it in, there won't be a big hole in your unit except for the rivet holes.

still waiting for my replacement.
Called last week and was told they would call shipping and it would be shipped and I would get an email. Still no email either!

Do the honorable thing, you would bitch if Masterbuilt didn't come through, they not only came through they exceeded your expectation. Sure its only a formality, however, Masterbuilt have these units built in China they most likely need that cord and panel to get warranty credit from whoever is building these in China

Got my replacement today.
It's the same one that I had, not the newer model with the window.
I can't understand why I had to wait since last October for them to send me out the same unit. How can the "old" version suddenly be in stock when they have been replaced with the new one?
I'm happy I finally got it, I can get down to some smokin' now.
I'm breaking her in as I write this.

Give them a call and ask them if they still want the cord and plate or if an e-mailed photo of them cut in half would do. I agree that they did you half a favor and I would at least offer to do them half in return.
