My Auber WS fail and how I cured it.

I don't know if anyone on here has had this problem.

I started noticing on the rear of my Auber WS 1500

that the heating plug was starting to heat up.

It kept getting worse, the plug was hot enough to burn you.

I at first attributed this to it just being a high amperage draw

    heating element.

This continued on until I finally came to the realization that this

unit was going to burn up at some point.

The unit was losing efficiency and couldn't maintain the temp

    in the smoker.

    Time to do something.

So I emailed Auber and explained the problem.

Within a couple of hours I received an email back from a nice person

    by the name of Suyi.

What this person told me essentially was that they used an El Cheapo

(my words not theirs) female plug on the unit.

I was told that the contacts were unlike a normal female plug in

that it only had contacts on the inside center of the plug.

They said I should make sure the legs on the male plug were

bent at least a little bit inward, which I did.

Tried it, that didn't help at all.

I wanted to smoke things now and not be sending my controller

out somewhere for a long time.

UNPLUG EVERYTHING BEFORE DOING ANY OF THIS.

So I took a piece of emery cloth cleaned up the male plug

then I folded the emery cloth over until I had four thicknesses,

in a width that would fit into the female plug.

I ran that back and forth in there a few times, plugged everything back in

That fixed it, no problems since.

So if your noticing that plug heating up abnormally, give this a try.

    Hope this helps someone out.

    Ed,

Good report.  The Auber is a very popular controller.  What brand smoker do you have it connected to? Just curious.

Hey OS, I built my own smoker,  was going to save huge amounts of money.       [IMG]

You got to know how that turned out, I could have bought two MES 40's.

She isn't done yet, but we're getting there.

    Thanks for looking.

Good looking unit, Gearjammer.  Where in CNY are you?  We're in Sennett between Auburn and Skaneateles.

(I actually do all my smoking out in N. Syracuse at my sister's house because I live in a high rise apartment with no outside smoking capability).

    Cheers!

Nice smoke shack and thanks for the report on the controller. Seems if Auber admits it's a problem they'd make the fix.

Hi Dave and Cmayna, I thank you both for the suggestion.

The reason it took me so long to get back to you is I

wanted to check my plug, the lugs on mine seem to be solid, not split.

If I have the wrong thought about what you're trying to show me,

    please explain a little further.

    Thank you again,          Ed

Some lugs are solid....  Most look solid but there is a hairline crack you "can" get a box blade into to widen the lugs for a better fit...

Hi dirtsailor and old sarge, thanks for the comments on my smoker

it's still a work in progress.

The company I work for has been calling me in to work lately.

    The nerve of them.

Auber didn't actually admit to having a problem with that plug.

I haven't asked them to repair it, I was having visions of losing

my controller for a month or two.

I have since read on here that their service is very fast.

They turned somebody's controller on here around in less than a week.

I haven't decided what to do about it yet.

But I will let everyone know.

    Thanks for looking.

It's to scary for me to think of mine going down

and suddenly I can't smoke anything.

I think I will get another one.

Three you must really be paranoid.    [IMG]
