Needed to get the fuel out of the ash to keep the temps up at later stages of smokes. I am not a metal worker so this is what I came up with. Bought and eaxtra charcoal grate for the Weber, set it on top of the old grate, steadied it with 2 balls of foil, and voilla.. Done.

Worked great, temps stayed steady into hour 5,and the ashes fell through.

mercy....:

rock,

good call on the additional foil balls, the rack was steady yesterday, but a couple additional balls wouldnt hurt.

It worked great temp wise, I held about 235 for the whole 5 hours using lump as my main fuel, and adding a chunk or two of hickory, and mesquite every 45 mins or so.

Jim that is great to hear on the temps... may try something like that on my seperate firebox, it could use a bit more airflow underneath.

I am doing up 25 pounds of jerky this weekend... some teriyaki and some using my Marinade/Cure.
thanks again,
Matt

Great mod!!!

I just bought my first Char-griller smoker and the mod that I am least lookfing forward to is fabricating a fire box cage. If you say this is successful, then I'll invest the $8!

I am 1 for 1 based on last weekends smoke. I was able to keep the temps up where in previous smokes it would fall between hours 4 - 6 because of all the ash.

hope it works for you.
