As some of you know I've been drawing up a couple new smokers on AutoCAD and SolidWorks. My 13 yr old son saw what I was doin and asked if he could try it. I told him to sketch it up first with pencil so he has a general idea of the type he wants. He said it will be a small one, his size of smoker.
Let me fill you in on my son a little bit. He is very advanced in art. He can draw a picture perfect deer, elk, moose, wolf or whatever you want. He is also a drummer. He's only been playing since February 09 and many have said he is a natural if not gifted.
With that in mind, he brought me back his drawing of a smoker with a side fire pit like mine only they looked like converted drums (not barrels) but playing drums. And on top of the stack he had a hood on it similar to mine only it was a cymbal. It was totally awesome. I can't find it now but when he comes home, I will get it and scan it.
I've seen locomotive smokers, hog lookin smokers etc. but I have never seen a smoker like Jacob designed. LOL

That smoker sounds sweet. I am a drummer myself and would love to bring that smoker to my family reunion where we have a family band and we are having our first annual rib cook off.

We definitely need qview of that design, and of the build when you and your son start on it!

Some good news and some bad. He didn't think it was a good idea so he threw his design away. Good news is after he saw the comments on here, he about crapped and got all excited. He's back drawing up another one.
If any of ya are wondering about the cymbal on top of the stack, it's a cracked 18 inch crash Zildjian. LOL

We're still drawing the plans in Acad. Should be done in the next couple of days. I was trying to do it with SolidWorks but I need to study it a little deeper.

I am waiting to see these designs in Auto CADD. I work a little with CAD at work but we use the bare minimum so I don't even know how you would go about designing a smoker or anything for that matter. I wish I knew more about Auto CADD.

Ray -- what a great story! You are bringin that boy up right! I think it's wonderful that he can combine interests of his with one of yours. And getting the kind of feedback and encouragement he is getting is a wonderful thing.

I see you are as good a dad as you are a smoker. Good for you!!

Now you guys are really making me sound old. When I drew prints I college we used a pencil and a square and things. Not no CAD systems back then we did it the old school way. And yes we had real light in the classroom too. But it's really cool that the kids getts into all that drawing and drums too. I hope he's good at the drums cause when they are just beating on the skins it can really hurt the ear drums.

I don't know if I can do this but here's a link to him playing.
This is when he just reached his ninth month playin. He has his own set of drums at home but he was invited over by a band to play some on their set. This set of drums that he's on was just bought used that day cause their real drummer quit and took his stuff. But anyhow, he's never played on this set before and he had a double kicker that was way outa sink with each other and he only had a ride cymbal and no hi-hat. This is also the first time he's ever played live with a guitarist. He made due with what he had. He actually plays at home till he gets blisters and bleeds.
I can't take him any further with the drums and a bud of mine who plays in another band that's been playing for 25 yrs can't take him any further either.
I don't believe in bragging and I hope I'm not. I just think this little guy is a natural and so does alot of other people.

  13. Hey Everyone, I'm new to the forum and have taken the 5 Day e-course. Just got a electric smoker but, here in illinois, it's still too cold for me to get to use it. Hoping to smoke alot this summer. Just wanted to say hi and keep on smokin'.

Well here's what we have so far. Just a 2-d drawing. I'm extending my knowledge of SolidWorks and working on a sweet 3-d version.
Here he is playing at nine months into it.

The vent cover is actually a 10 inch Wuhan China Cymbal.
I guess this is what you would call a "real drum smoker".

Looking at him playing His drums One can certainly see where a smoker decked out like some drums would be an awesome look. You could even get name of the band lazer cut onto a piece of Stainless Steel then welded onto the side of the drum for a really cool look. Bongos for the side firebox.

Man you could have a backyard BBQ complete with music all wrapped into one. Big drum roll to announce that the brisket was done. [IMG]

PS. When he finally makes it in a big name band, do you know how much that video of his early days as a drummer is going to be worth? [IMG]

Well I've been practicing with my SolidWorks 3-D. I really think my son and me are ready to begin designing that -drum set- smoker. Check out his drum set I was practicing on. I have along way to go but I've made it a long way from just working with 2-D AutoCAD. I'm goin to finish designing the hangers for the toms before I tackle the cymbals.

I'm a little older than you by a couple of years. Come-on now. LOL

Hey it is ok to brag about your kids, he seems very talented. You should look into getting him professional private lessons. That will take his natural talent to the next level.

That would be so cool for him to have his own little "Drum Set Smoker". Go for it dad. I know you can do it.

That is awesome both the smoker and the video. For someone who has never played with a live guitarist the 1:55-2:05 mark was sweet!
