Wanting to develop my own original cocktail, it was discovered there was a restaurant in D.C. that made one similar to what I had in mind, but not quite.  Mine is alder smoked, the herring, the pickling solution and the cocktail ingredients.  The result being, "Mr. T's Scandinavian Salute".

In honor of all those who provide us with this delicacy from the sea.

                                                    Mr. T's  Scandinavian Salute

    Recipe:

A goodly sum of gin or vodka, a splash of vermouth, shaken not stirred then alder smoked. Add a garnish of smoked pickled herring. -- and that's it.

    Pic 1 - Ingredients

Pic 2 - Smoking ingredients with pale blue alder smoke, 5 - 10 seconds.

                                               Please, drink responsibly.

The end of the tube goes right in the drink? Saw a video where a guy put it in the shaker before he poured it. I still havent experimented much with my gun. I have so many BBQ toys now its hard to choose from.

Cool tutorial and as always I learned something.

Yes, the tube goes in the liquid about a half inch for best results.  For show put the smoke in a shaker.  The ice in the shaker makes the smoke settle to the bottom, shake for 30 seconds and pour.  Both methods work very well.

    Have fun with your gun.

    Tom,

That looks great, and thanks for the tutorial for the smoked pickled herring.

I frequently make Bloody Mary's with pickled herring, and I'll follow your procedure using the gun as you have on the next batch.

    Thanks, again.

Your welcome, if you like herring, you will love it after adding additional smoke to it.  I have smoked Bloody Mary's in the past with very good result's.  Will have to try one with the herring garnish.

Sounds tasty Tom! One of my favorite smoked liquors is Mezcal (Mescal). Makes a fantastic Bloody Mary. Mescal gets its smokey flavor because they roast the pina (heart) of the maguey in earth pits for three days over hot rocks. The hearts are turned into mash allowed to ferment. After fermentation it is distilled twice.

Thanks DS,  Just happen to have some Monte Alban Mezcal.  Between you and dls's suggestion to use the smoked herring for a garnish, a Bloody Mary is on the menu this evening.  Thanks for the tip.  The worm keeps getting closer.

I have a bottle of that too! I may have to break down and craft one for me! No pickled herring in my house right now, so I'll have to skip that.
